You thought she wouldn’t come back, but yes, it’s happened Cruella De Vil
(Glenn Close) is again in action. Cruella is the villainess from 101 Dalmatians.
Now we have 102 Dalmatians with Cruella’s henchman being the furrier Le Pelt
(Gerard Depardieu). The people who try to stop them are Ioan Gruffudd and
Alice Evans.
The story has Cruella De Vil in prison after being captured from her escapades
in 101 Dalmatians. She has undergone aversion therapy for Dalmatian puppy
coats. Cruella is deemed cured and goes out into the world trying to save
a dog pound in London. The pound is run by Gruffudd who welcomes her assistance.
Cruella’s parole officer (Evans) doesn’t think Cruella is cured, but decides
to wait and see. When the chimes of London’s famous clock, Big Ben, hit Cruella’s
ears, aversion therapy goes out the window and slowly, the canine villainess
wants all those Dalmatian puppies for a coat. The dog hero is Oddball, a Dalmatian
with no spots. This little character is wanted, because his pure white hide
would be the hood for her coat.
Though the film is rated G, there are moments of peril and thought-provoking
scenes such as discussing how the pelt is taken from the animal, puppies continually
being chased or dangled from high spaces and comic violence of the cartoon
variety though performed by real actors. What is amusing, though, is watching
Glenn Close as she slowly turns back into the Cruella we know. She starts
seeing the world in terms of black and white.
102 Dalmatians is certainly Glenn Close’s film. She is Cruella De Vil and
exaggerates every motion. This is actress Gloria Swanson two generations removed.
The film will promote discussion of the fur industry. On a serious note, though
Dalmatian puppies are cute, they do grow up to be large dogs who need large
yards to roam in, behavior training and attention. As with getting any animal
for a pet, the entire family should be involved in this decision. That aside,
the animal trainers for 102 Dalmatians must have had a ball with their four-legged
cast. No matter what Cruella comes up with, the dogs steal the film.
Be aware of animal-in-peril scenes and comic violence. Recommendation is not
for children under age 6.
