"3000 Miles to Graceland" doesn’t refer to an Elvis Presley fan’s trek to the late star’s home; rather it refers to how far from reality the plot of this film is. Imagine an Elvis-impersonator convention in Las Vegas, but some of the impersonators are crooks ready for a big heist. How better to escape when everyone looks the same? Kevin Costner ("Thirteen Days") and Kirk Russell ("Soldier" and who actually played Elvis in a film) star in a film of robbery and murder. Others in the cast are Bokeen Woodbine ("The Big Hit"), Courteney Cox (television’s "Friends"), Christian Slater ("Broken Arrow"), Kevin Pollak ("End of Days") and David Arquette (the "Scream" movies.)
Costner, Russell, Slater, Arquette and Woodbine come to Elvis Week in Vegas looking like everyother Elvis impersonator, but carrying guns in their guitar cases. Shades of a Robert Rodriguez film. Anyway, the plans were made by Costner and Russell who once shared a cell in prison. The gang manages to pull off the job, but people are killed along theway. Also, Costner wants all the lootfor himself, but before he can finish Russell off, Kurt steals the cash, and with girlfriend Cox and her son (David Kaye), goes on the run with Costner and the Feds right behind him. What will happen?
"3000 Miles to Graceland" gives Kevin Costner a chance to do what he does best and that is, play the bad guy. Gone is Kenny O’Donnell from "Thirteen Days," enter Murphy (Costner’s character here) who is one bad dude. Russell does well as the guy way in over his head. He and Murphy shared a cell so long they can predict each other’s moves. It’s a chess game that will end up "checkmate" for someone. Cox falls in the background as the girlfriend and her son (David Kaye) has one-too-many wiseguy lines. The cast is wired up to go, but the director fails them. Demian Lichtenstein comes to the big screen after directing movie videos and it shows. There is little continuity and haphazard camera work. The film does have a high body count and explosions, though if you want your brain numbed for over 90 minutes.
Be aware of violence in a bank robbery and in various chase scenes, a child who steals, profanity and sexual situations.
