THE 6TH DAY
2
Rated PG 13
Website: www.Sony.com
The 6th Day is the latest Arnold Schwarzenegger film and the topic is cloning.
Does the world need two Arnold’s? He thinks it does, hence a film when Arnold
discovers Arnold. Actually, the title comes from the Bible where, after God
created man, God rested. In this plot, God may be resting, but man goes on
and on seeking immortality. Director Roger Spottiswoode (Tomorrow Never Dies)
works from a haphazard script by Cormac and Marianne Wibberley.
The story has Arnold as a high-tech helicopter pilot who returns from a mission
and finds himself at his own birthday party. What happened? It was a mistake,
because Arnold was believed to be dead, so a clone was made of him. This went
against the 6th Day Law of cloning, and the real Arnold has to be taken out
of commission permanently. This results in chases, fights and the eventual
encounter between the two Arnold’s. Villain here is the owner of the cloning
company, Tony Goldwyn (Ghost) and his henchman, Michael Rucker ( Henry, Portrait
of a Serial Killer.) Arnold’s confused wife is Wendy Crewson and the faithful
sidekick is Michael Rapaport (Men of Honor.) Oh, yes, Robert Duvall (The Apostle)
is here as a scientist. You see, the film is loaded with talent, but wasted
with this banal script. Arnold keeps fighting the same villains who die,
are cloned, and come back again just like a cartoon.
The 6th Day is strictly for action fans. If your quota of chases and fight
scenes hasn’t been satisfied yet, this film is for you, and also for Arnold
fans. Otherwise, what could have been a novel premise is tossed away and attention
is given to the high-tech helicopter. One interesting moment in the film,
though, is the explanation given to cloning. It is supposed to save lives,
such as Duvall’s wife who is gravely ill, however, greedy men want to become
immortal this way. The clones here are shapeless forms floating in tanks waiting
for DNA material to make them into a person. Arnold actually hides in such
a tank, and this is an unusual moment. The scenery is magnificent (Vancouver)
and everyone tries, but The 6th Day ends up being an average action film.
Methinks, a star other than Arnold Schwarzenegger would have made the difference
in this film.
Be aware of violence, profanity and sexual scenes.
