CRITICS CHOICE THE BEST FILMS OF THE LAST CENTURY
COMPILED BY MARIE ASNER
It is the dream of all film critics to be able to make their list of favorite films of the past century. This would not have been possible in 1900 as the mass production of motion pictures was not possible, or of interest to many people, at that time. In making such a list today, one can divide it into categories including Favorite Foreign Films, What Influenced Motion Pictures The Most category or even Favorite Mysteries of the Century. I’ve gone back over my life and chosen twenty films that have made an impact on me. They are listed in alphabetical order.
Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein (1948)—the first film I ever saw, years after it was made. I saw it with my grandfather who kept putting his hat over my face so I couldn’t see the monster. This film is now considered a classic of comedy timing.
Ben-Hur (1959)—the first film to make me breathless. The chariot race was done with real actors doing their stunts. No digitally enhanced computer work.
Dr. Strangelove (1964)—Peter Sellers in one of his best roles (the others being in The Pink Panther and World of Henry Orient) in this humorous and harrowing look at a War Room
Doctor Zhivago (1965)—a classic example of adapting a novel to the screen. Who can forget the snow scenes?
Dumbo (1941)—I fell in love with this little guy a long time ago and the romance continues. Animation and music combine for a classic film.
Gone With The Wind (1939)—this was a bonner year for film, with The Wizard of Oz in the group. Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler come to life and have stayed there.
Lawrence of Arabia (1962)—Peter O’Toole inhabited the role of Lawrence and the soundtrack is still exquisite.
Our Man in Havana (1960)—a lesser-known film starring Sir Alec Guinness, Maureen O’Hara, Noel Coward and Ernie Kovacs about a vacuum cleaner salesman in Cuba who is believed to be a spy
Ryan’s Daughter (1970)—Robert Mitchum catches the eye in his offbeat role as a school teacher with a straying wife
Star Wars (1977)—saw this film twice on the same day and it still hasn’t lost its magic
Sturm in Wasserglas (1965)—a German film I saw abroad that would have been considered "racy" then, about a comic marital misunderstanding
Sweet Smell of Success (1957)—a cutting film of a gossip columnist who thinks he has the power of life in his columns. Stars Burt Lancaster and Tony Curtis.
The Godfather Trilogy (Part I in 1972, Part II in 1974 and Part III in 1990)—beautifully done films of a mobster, his life style and how it affects those around him
The Manchurian Candidate (1962)—Frank Sinatra and Angela Lansbury play against type in the film of brainwashing and the Cold War
The Mephisto Waltz (1971)—lesser known film starring Robert Alda as a man who doesn’t age
The Mission (1986)—how early missionaries into South America affected the native population
The Pink Panther (1964)—Peter Sellers as the bumbling Inspector Clouseau, Herbert Lom as his harried supervisor and who can forget Robert Wagner hiding in a shower as his sweater gets longer and longer
The River (1937)—documentary of Virgil Thomsen’s music and the taming of a river that has a history of violent floods
The Robe (1953)—conversion of a Roman centurion and the delightful Jay Robinson portraying a wicked Caligula
The Thing (1951)—classic horror film of finding a flying saucer frozen in ice. Introduced James Arness to audiences, though who could recognize him as the "man eating carrot."
Also rans include Sister Kenny (1946), The Heiress (1949), Raise The Red Lantern (1992), Citizen Kane (1941), The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence (1962), The Wizard of Oz (1939), The Grapes of Wrath (1940), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Alien (1983), The Treasure of the Sierra Madre (1948), To Kill A Mockingbird (1962) and The Best Years Of Our Lives (1946).
