“A Family Man”, for Nicholas Cage, is a far cry from his previous film, “Gone
in 60 Seconds.” This time, Cage plays a man who is faced with a dilemma. How
to cope with the family he didn’t know he had! Scriptwriters David Diamond
and David Weissman get a bit inventive here and hand it over to director Brett
Ratner (“Rush Hour”) to do. All in all, the whole thing turns out to be a
pleasant experience, especially when Cage’s co-star is Tea Leoni (“Deep Impact.”)
The story has Cage playing a man who is tops on Wall Street. It’s Christmas
Eve, and Cage ignores a message to contact an old flame. On his way home,
Cage meets a robber (Don Cheadle from “Mission to Mars”) and then wakes up
to find a wife (Leoni), a house full of kids and a dog. What happened? There
is life in suburbia instead of Wall Street, a neighbor (Jeremy Piven from
“Very Bad Things”) telling him how great his life is, working as a tire salesman
for his father-in-law and diapers everywhere. One person catches on that this
isn’t “Dad,” and that is Cage’s “new” daughter, Annie. When one meets an obstacle
in the story, there is an explanation for it, and the Diamond-Weissman script
covers most bases.
“A Family Man” shows us that Nicolas Cage can do comedy as well as he did
in “Moonstruck.” Give the guy kids and a dog and his comedic timing pops up.
Tea Leoni is equally savvy as a woman with wit who is a sexy Mom and knows
the marriage angles. She goes along with his forgetfulness and knows the marriage
is securely on the road to middle age. Other performances worth mentioning
are Cheadle as a person who weaves in and out of Cage’s life, and Saul Rubinek
(“The Contender”.)
“A Family Man” has a familiar ring to it and may remind you of “My Myself
I.” Can a person have two lives? Can a person switch from one life to another
without anyone catching on? Can a man have one, final grasp at happiness?
“A Family Man” works on this premise with a solid script and good acting.
Be aware of profanity and sexual scenes.
