    "Almost Famous," a lovingly made film by writer/director Cameron Crowe
("Jerry Maguire") explores the rock world of the 1970's. What teenage boy or
girl wouldn't want to be a part of that fantasy world where crowds scream
your name, fans follow you everywhere and laws on narcotics and alcohol are
loose. In "Almost Famous," Crowe writes about his own life as a young man
writing for "Rolling Stone" while in his teens and following rock bands (such
as Led Zeppelin) around the country for magazine stories. In this film, the
young man is newcomer Patrick Fugit and the band, headed by Billy Crudup
("Waking the Dead") is called "Stillwater." Music score by Nancy Wilson is
monumental, including such songs as Paul Simon's "America" or "It Wouldn't
Have Made Any Difference" by Todd Rundgren.

    The story is part comedy, part serious. Fugit goes to a rock concert to
get information for an article. He is na�ve, but impresses band members with
knowledge of their music and before you can say, "Come with us," he's part of
the group and invited to travel with them. Thus Fugit, still in his middle
teens, leaves home to enter the world of the traveling rock musician. There
are hotel rooms after hotel rooms, young girls, drugs, alcohol and obnoxious
behavior that is condoned because the guys are "rock stars" and idolized by
fans. Remember, this was the Seventies and time of rebellion. How Fugit
keeps his head together amid the turmoil around him makes the story. This
young actor portrays his character (William Miller) like a kid in a candy
shop. Crudup as the rock star, Russell Hammond, is talented and arrogant.
The girls in this film, called "Band-Aids" rather than groupies, are lead by
teenager Penny Lane (Kate Hudson from "200 Cigarettes" and real life daughter
of actress Goldie Hawn). Traveling with the band and being part of the
entourage is intoxicating, indeed, but sane? Hardly. Emotions run heavy and
with involvement sometimes come heartbreak.

    Others in the cast are Frances McDormand ("Fargo") as Fugit's anxious Mom
who keeps telling him, "Don't take drugs." Philip Seymour Hoffman
("Flawless") plays Lester Bangs, who gives Fugit his first big writing
assignment. Amid the crowd you can also see Anna Paquin ("The X-Men") and
Fairuza Balk ("The Waterboy.")

    "Almost Famous" is literally a fairy-tale film. Become a member of the
band, enjoy their perks and write about them. Trouble is, what do you write
about? Do you do a puff piece or what actually happens? And if you write
about what happens (drugs and sex), who do you alienate, the band or their
adoring public? The acting, direction, script and photography (John Toll
from "Legends of the Fall") are first rate.

    Be aware of profanity, sexual situations, drug and alcohol use.
