    Admittedly, I went to this film with trepidation and found myself
interested in the lives of two people who meet on a weekly basis just to have
sex. "An Affair of Love" is a semi-documentary starring Nathalie Baye ("The
Return of Martin Guerre") and Sergi Lopez ("Western.") The script is by
Philippe Blasband with a beautiful music score by Andre' Dziezuk, Marc Mergen
and Jeannot Sanavia. Director Frederic Fonteyne ("Max and Bobo") lets the
actors do their thing and this they do quite well, thank you.

    The story is set in Paris with Baye and Lopez separately talking to an
unseen person who could be a therapist. They are describing this love
affair, though, as it turns out, each has slightly different memories of it.
In flashbacks, we see she has a fantasy about love she would like to act out,
so places an ad in a magazine and Lopez answers the ad. They meet in a caf�,
immediately like each other, go to a hotel room and have sex. We never do
find out what the fantasy is and it is only toward the end of the film that
we spend some time in the room with them. The story is taken up by
reminiscences, caf� talk, and the slow realization that they just might be
falling in love with each other. They don't know each other's name, or where
to find each other. They just show up each Thursday, or sometimes Tuesday
and Thursday.

    The film is leisurely paced and cinematographer Virginie Saint-Martin
lovingly dwells on the faces of the actors. Nathalie Baye has an intriguing
smile and determined stance. You sense that this is a woman who gets what she
wants. Sergi Lopez appears somewhat shy and this is an endearing quality to
the audience. He has a little boy look about him and wonders if, at five
foot six inches, he is too short. She rides the subway, he drives a car. She
drinks wine or tea and he has cognac. The hotel clerk doesn't bat an eye
when they rent a room for a few hours. What is intriguing is how natural the
two people meet, decide to have sex and keep it at that. It's when love
enters and the next step is an emotional one that Baye and Lopez realize what
is happening to them.

    "An Affair of Love" was originally titled "A Pornographic Affair" and
that title, alone, would have frightened people at the box office. As it
stands, the film is about sex but in a gentle way.

Be aware of nudity, descriptive language and sexual situations.
