THE ANIMAL

“The Animal” has an unusual story line. What would happen if more than the usual amount of animal parts were used to help cure aman? This is what happens when Rob Schneider (“Deuce Bigelow”) meets both a terrible accident and a mad scientist. The result is a comedy bordering on gross-out, but enough originality to afford guilty pleasures. Schneider’s co-stars in the film are Edward Asner (“The Bachelor”) and Colleen Haskell (television’s “Survivor I” series.)
The premise has Rob as a desk clerk police officer who just can’t make the grade. While responding to a 911 call (he was the only one there to take the call), has an accident and is rescued by the scientist. Rob is saved by an infusion of animal parts and can’t remember the operation. His sense of smell has increased and soon he is supercop because of the ability to sniff out drugs. This type of storyline has endless possibilities and the writers (Schneider and Tom Brady) make the most of them. There is Rob and the goat, Rob and the pond, and you get the picture. Not only are there canine partr eplacements, but other animals as well. Rob never knows what to expect at any given moment. Rob can’t remember the operation and thinks his newly developed skills are because of working out.

Edward Asner playsthe role of Rob’s police chief and who can’t figure out why this desk clerk suddenly becomes supercop. Haskell (who studied theater arts) is the girl of Rob’s dreams. Other members of the cast are Cloris Leachman (who worked with Edi n “The Mary Tyler Moore” television series) and John C. McGinley (“Any Given Sunday.”)

“The Animal” wouldn’t work without Rob Schneider. A Jim Carrey would bring too much to this role (think “Ace Ventura”), but Schneider works at a different pace and as a result, “The Animal” is a bright spot with amusing script. McGinley overacts, Haskell’s smile carries her through, but acting is not her thing, and Asner anchors his scenes.

Be aware: the film is rated PG 13 for language, stomach churning scenes (eating worms, for example) and suggestive sexual scenes.
