A.I. (ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE)

Rated PG 13

Be aware of threatening situations, sexual connotations and scenes of destroying robots that resemble humans

Website: www.AIthemovie.com

“A.I.” (Artificial Intelligence) is sure to be a winner for director Steven Spielberg. This is one of the most anticipated films of 2001—which has had mediocre pickings, indeed. The screenplay is written by Spielberg, based on a screen story by Ian Watson and the story, “Super-Toys Last All Summer Long” by Brian Aldiss. The concept for the film was done by the late Stanley Kubrick, who purchased the rights to Aldiss’s story over twenty years ago. The friendship between Kubrick and Spielberg built through the years and one day, Kubrick decided Spielberg could direct this film and he, Kubrick, could produce. The live partnership was not to be, but the Kubrick influence is felt throughout the film. There is an other-worldness here that is between magical-fairy tale-and parables. When you create something almost human, can you destroy it, also?

“A. I.” Has Oscar-nomination written all over it from director to screenplay to special effects to lead actor, Haley Joel Osment as “David”, to Frances O’Connor as “Mommy” to Jude Law as Joe, another robot. The story begins with the Swinton family (Sam Robards and O’Connor). They mourn their ill son, Martin. “Dad” comes home with a new son, David the robot, programmed to bond with the family. A warning comes with the product, though: the bonding is permanent and if the family sends David back, he will be destroyed.

All goes well until Martin recovers and comes home from the hospital. There is sibling rivalry galore with David getting the bad side of it. Eventually, David has to go, so “Mom” drives he and Teddy, a robotic teddy bear, out to the woods and leaves them there. David has bonded with Mom and HAS to find her. Thus, begin the adventures of David and Teddy as they go through a circus of horrors that destroy robots to the professor who created David to something else entirely. David wants to be a real boy, like the “Pinocchio” story. Can this happen?

John Williams music score subtly underlines the action on the screen. There is almost a dream-like quality about much of the film, as though the audience is being drawn into a story outside time. Special effects are there as part of the story-set about 150 years in the future—and don’t overwhelm you. Osment holds your attention throughout, as someone made so young no one knows what to do with him. Joe was created as a boyfriend-robot to date women, but still has the capacity to protect David. The scene in the circus (called “Flesh Fair”) is of people who hate robots (artificial life) and invent cruel ways to dispose of them (think Roman Circus, here) Be forewarned, bring handkerchief to theater.

In a rush to create life, man creates robots so human-like it takes something like an x-ray flashlight to see under the skin as to whether there is bone or metal. Man attempts to implant chips that “create” emotion resembling love in the robot. Such a simple answer for man to find love in the Bible, but this is not the way of the society depicted in “A.I.” What a thought-provoking film it is. Is this our future?
