    "Bait" starring Jamie Foxx ("Any Given Sunday") is the story of an ex-con
being set up as bait to get killers.  Of course, he doesn't know it. 
Director Antoine Fuqua  ("The Replacement Killers") working from a script by
Tony Gilroy, Adam Scheinman and Andrew Scheinman, tries to put together a
film of chases and intrigues.  He almost succeeds.  "Bait" also stars David
Morse and Doug Hutchinson ("The Green Mile"), Kimberly Elise ("Beloved"),
Robert Pastorelli ("A Simple Wish") and Mike Epps ("Next Friday.")

    The story has humorous elements.  It begins with Foxx landing in jail for
stealing prawns.  He really wants to go straight and have a life with
girlfriend, Kimberly.  When Foxx is in prison, he meets Pastorelli who, with
Hutchinson, masterminded a robbery that netted millions in gold.  Trouble is,
Hutchinson shot the guards and Pastorelli, with a weak heart, got caught. 
Before he dies, Pastorelli tells Foxx pertinent information.  How valuable is
it?  Enough to get Foxx sprung with the Feds (Morse) hot in his trail.  What
Foxx doesn't know, is that there is a tracking device on him.  Who will get
to Foxx first, the Feds or the dangerous Hutchinson? Two extra elements are
tossed into "Bait."  One is when Foxx discovers he has a son by Kimberly and
stops to bond with the boy.  This could be a film in itself.  Or, how about
the wayward brother (Epps) who deals in stolen goods.  Foxx and his brother
are falsely accused as informants.  What's a guy to do in these situations?

    "Bait" has good elements going for it, and they are the chase elements
via technical visuals with a pounding music score by Mark Mancina. However,
Jamie Foxx is lackluster in the role of the fugitive.  He certainly has a
flair for comedy, but is bland as the lead here.  Someday he will find a
script that will show his range.  Also, there really is no suspense here and
you can figure out what is going to happen.  Hutchinson's nerdy computer guy
is over the top.

    David Morse is given a one-note role as the Federal agent and Hutchinson
looks like a poster boy for mad criminals.  Should the film be ex-con bonds
with son and saves the day, ex-con on the run followed by Feds, ex-con on the
run followed by trigger man or even ex-con on the run deals with brother. 
This "Bait" is dangling before the audience, but will they bite? 

    Be aware of profanity, sexuality and violence.
