BEDAZZLED

"Bedazzled" is a fanciful story of the devil trying to win a soul. In this case, the devil is portrayed as looking like model/actress Elizabeth Hurley ("Austin Powers") and the guy whose soul on the auction block is Brendan Fraser ("The Mummy.") Director and screenwriter for "Bedazzled" is Harold Ramis ("Analyze This.")

The problem with "Bedazzled" is that somewhere, sometime, someone told Elizabeth Hurley she could act. Her irritating habit of over-enunciating every syllable and posing as though ready to walk down a runway throws away her part of the film. Brendan Fraser, on the other hand, has his comedy parts down pat. It�s really his film.

The story has Fraser as a shy guy who is a nerd with his friends. Frances O�Connor ("Mansfield Park") is the girl he loves from afar. The devil (Hurley) seizes this opportunity to give Fraser a proposition: I�ll give you seven wishes and you give me your soul. Fraser is smitten with the idea and herein lies the film. We have to wade through those wishes which are fantasy lives with a catch. For example, he wants lots of money and to be married to Frances, but ends up a Colombian drug lord with Frances as a straying wife. Then there is the desire to be a topnotch basketball star and this one ends up with Fraser being over seven feet tall with an adoring audience, but he perspires profusely and can�t put two words together in a sentence. You see how the rest goes. The devil is presented as a whimsical entity with a wry sense of humor and the "guardian" for Fraser is a quiet black man with meaningful looks.

"Bedazzled" is a new version of the 1967 comedy of the same title. What would you do if presented with seven wishes? Save the world from hunger? No more nuclear bombs? Not in Hollywood, we have a man in love, a girl who doesn�t know he exists and a "devil" with playful attitude. Greed comes to the forefront and the world goes to the end of the line.

This "Bedazzled," only sparks when Fraser is present. His innocent looks and amazement at what is going on around him are just right for the role. Frances O�Connor is fine as the girl who has to portray different characters in Fraser�s fantasies. As for Hurley, the role gives her a chance to have multiple costume changes.

Be aware of sexual scenes, profanity and some drug scenes.
