Fans of author Helen Fielding’s “Bridget Jones’s Diary” can breathe a collective sigh of relief. The screen adaptation, starring Renee Zellweger (“Nurse Betty”) is funny and brings “Bridget” to life. In case you lived in a cave for a bit, “Bridget Jones’s Diary” was a best seller and encompasses a year in the life of a British girl who “gains 74 pounds during the year and loses 72.” Well, that’s something we can relate to. Also starring in this film are Hugh Grant (“Notting Hill”) and Colin Firth (“Sense and Sensibility.”) Fielding co-wrote the script with Richard Curtis (“Four Weddings and a Funeral.”) and Andrew Davies. Sharon Maguire directs the film.
The story follows British Bridget as she tries to meet the right guy but, instead runs into her boss (Grant) and a friend from childhood (Firth). What’s a girl to do? Bridget is trying to climb the ladder of network journalism and has to hang on to every rung with both hands. There are hilarious moments when all goes wrong (wearing the wrong clothes to a party), but Bridget has her trusty cigarettes there for comfort.
Renee Zellweger may have seemed an odd choice to play Bridget, who is obsessed with her weight. However, Renee put on about 20 pounds for this role and manages an accent fairly well. The one to watch is Hugh Grant who is never better as the boss with an eye for the ladies and if they are in his office, so much the better. Firth is a bit starchy at times, but all in all, the audience won’t be disappointed. This is a comedy that sets up situations well and comes through. Others in the cast are Jim Broadbent, Gemma Jones and Embeth Davidtz.
Zellweger may well become the poster girl for women with a weight problem. There is a hilarious part about choosing a girdle and the what’s-in-the-refrigerator-when-I’m-hungry hunt. Mom and Dad separate and Bridget feels lost. There is no guidebook for life here and she goes on as best she can.
This writer had an opportunity to meet author Fielding two years ago as she was on a book through the U.S. She wore a light gray suit with cream color blouse and broad smile. Helen is an Oxford graduate and worked in British television for many years before writing a column for “The Independent.” She chose to use an alter ego in her column and the use of a different persona evolved into her style. “Bridget Jones”is a combination of elegance and little girl, naïve and sexy. Fielding sidestepped any similarities between herself and Bridget by stating, “That’s Bridget and I’m me.” In person, Helen Fielding resembles actress Meg Ryan. When asked about her personal life, Fielding said, “Bridget wouldn’t answer and neither will I.” Fielding lives in the posh Notting Hill area of London and has a boyfriend, but won’t say who he is. Fielding has two other books out, there is “Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason” a sequel to the first book, and a re-release of her novel of several years ago, “Cause Celeb.”
