The Cell - 1 1/2

"The Cell" is a visually stunning film, but mired in barely average dialogue, no screen chemistry between stars and a plot that could have been done in one hour on television's "Outer Limits." The story by Mark Protosevich concerns a serial killer and the psychologist and subsequent FBI agent who are after him. Director Tarsem (famous for REM's video "Losing My Religion") works this film as an elongated rock video.

Jennifer Lopez ("Out of Sight") is the psychologist who has a machine enabling her to enter the minds of comatose patients. Vincent D'Onofrio ("Men in Black") is the serial killer who dispatches his victim by drowning them. It's what happens after the victim is dead that Vincent proves himself further out than Hannibal Lector. Vincent ends up comatose and Jennifer uses the machine on him to find the next victim before time runs out. Vince Vaughn ("Psycho") is the FBI agent who tries to locate the victim.

What's inside Vincent's head makes for an interesting display of costumes and background. Vincent gets to show why he makes such a good villain---an actor not afraid to take chances with the character. Other than that, the audience may be checking their watches thinking the theater seat is their cell. Special effects do not a film make. Jennifer Lopez is adequate here and Vaughn seems distracted. Well, why not, when you are popping in and out of someone's brain. Dialogue plods along and that is not what is needed in a film of this genre. Who knows if this is what is inside anyone's mind, especially a serial killer. Why this person chooses to kill in devious ways is anyone's guess, but the script heads for abused as a child.

"The Cell" has a story concept unusual even for Hollywood. The "R" rating is well deserved. Be aware of gore, nudity, language and images that could be disquieting.
