Coyote Ugly     1 1/2

    "Coyote Ugly" is the name of a bar in a warehouse-type area of town.  Girl bartenders/bar maids expect customers to have a good time and this includes being sprayed with water and watching girls dance precariously on the bar top.  Fun?  Some think so and this bar is packed with customers.  Director David McNally makes his directorial debut here working from a script by Gina Wendkos (television's "Wiseguys.")   

  The film stars Piper Perabo ("Rocky and Bullwinkle") as Violet, who leaves her home with Dad (John Goodman from television's "Roseanne") and goes to the Big City to push her skills as a songwriter.  Well, this doesn't work, so Violet ends up as a bar maid, you-know-where, along with Mario Bello (television's "ER"), newcomer Izabella Miki, model Tyra Banks and Bridget Moynahan (television's "Sex and the City.")  This whole situation wouldn't be complete without a love interest, so enter Adam Garcia.  Will the girls survive night after night with the wild antics at Coyote Ugly?  Will Violet get her heart's desire?  Will the soundtrack keep you awake?  Probably.

"Coyote Ugly" is a showcase for new talent, that's for sure.  There is enough energy in the dance routines to light up half of Broadway.  Acting is another thing, though, and when people like John Goodman show up on the screen, the difference between just-beginning and already-there is apparent.   The girls do this for money (one is going to law school), but aren't there other jobs?  If there were, there wouldn't be a movie called "Coyote Ugly."  By the way, Violet's songs were written by Diane Warren and Violet's singing is done by LeAnn Rimes.
   
"Coyote Ugly" brims with sexuality and plenty of navels.  There are so many people packed in that bar you wonder how many hours it takes to get them all out before the bar fills up again.  Despite an energetic soundtrack and interesting dancing, the plot doesn't get off the ground and acting is marginal.  Be aware of liquor scenes, bar brawls, and suggestive scenes. Language is surprisingly mild, considering.
