DR2 (DR. DOLITTLE 2)

2001 is definitely the year of the sequel. Here comes “Doctor Dolittle 2” with Eddie Murphy (voice of the donkey in “Shrek”) reprising his role as the animal doctor who definitely talks to the animals Rex Harrison (the original film “Dr.Dolittle”) must be rolling over in his grave by now. Going from the cultured to the gross-out is typical Hollywood fare these days. You will recognize many stars that do the voices of the animals. There are Norm Macdonald, Lisa Kudrow, Steve Zahn, John Leguizamo, Molly Shannon and Renee Taylor.

In this story, Murphy is famous as an animal doctor and has more patients than he knows what to do with. A problem arises when the animals want to go on strike against a land developer. What to do? Dr. Dolittle figures if he can find an endangered species, the law will protect the animal and work against the developer. Who to save? Enter Ava, the bear. She lives alone in the woods but wants companionship. Dr. Dolittle finds a male friend for her in Archie, the bear, who turns out to be a circus bear that loves wise cracks and fast food. There is a job for Dolittle and his faithful dog, Lucky—retrain Archie for the wild in time to save the forest (“Mark Trail,” are you taking notes?)

“Doctor Dolittle 2” is another in a line of gross-out humor films. There is barely (excuse the pun) enough amusement with Murphy’s antics and the animals are cute but why resort to such tactics when you have a multitude of talent to work with? The sub-story of Dolittle’s teenage daughter (Raven-Symone’) is lost in the woods. The humor of body functions has been mined to the depths of credibility. What could have been a sharper film is pulled down to below standards.

The film is rated PG for language and quite crude humor. Be forewarned.
