“Driven” is Sylvester Stallone’s latest film and he worked to bring his story to the screen. Actually, Sly plays a secondary character here to actor Kip Pardue (“Remember the Titans.”) Stallone needs a film hit under his belt as his remake of “Get Carter” tanked at the boxoffice. Racecar driving is a real life passion of Stallone and with director Renny Harlin (“Deep Blue”) the action sequences are thrilling.

The film explores the world of CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) with cars so low they are almost knee high. Stallone plays the character of Joe Tanto who is now on the back road of life after one too many auto crashes. New driver Jimmy Bly (Pardue) is cocky and needs guidance and who better to help him than Joe? Carl Henry (Burt Reynolds) is the racing team owner and brings Joe into the fold. Of course, there is a love story involved, so for Sly it’s his ex-wife, Gina Goshen and for Bly, it’s Estella Warren. The women wear falling-out-of clothing as in: when you are shopping, buy three sizes smaller.

“Driven” is not to be confused with a film of the same title about taxi drivers in L.A. That “Driven” plays occasional film festivals and stars Chad Lowe. Sylvester Stallone’s “Driven” can be heard a mile away. The film also has one of the fastest races filmed, with cars going over 180 mph through Chicago streets in a “catch-me-if-you-can” sequence. Renny Harlin knows how to stage a good race and fans may be hanging on for dear life at times. The plot is predictable and acting about on par with a “B” movie. What is reminiscent of the “Rocky” films is that even though a person is near the top of his profession, he still needs to get focused mentally. Who better to focus you than a mature teacher figure (read Stallone here and Burgess Meredith in the “Rocky” films). Once a “Rocky,” always a “Rocky.” Don’t expect Shakespeare.

Be aware of intense car crashes, sexual situations, profanity and drug use.
