ENEMY AT THE GATES

“Enemy at the Gates” is a taunt thriller about two snipers battling it out at the waning of World War II. Based on a true story, we have a Russian sniper, Vassily (Jude Law from “The Talented Mr. Ripley”) trying to kill a German sniper, Koenig (Ed Harris from “Pollock.”) As though that weren’t enough, there is another Russian officer, Danilov (Joseph Fiennes from “Shakespeare in Love”) who makes Vassily a national hero, and Tania (Rachel Weisz from “The Mummy”) as the girl Danilov and Vassily both love.

First of all, the sets for this film are wonderfully done. You can believe you are in Stalingrad at the end of the war. The decisive battle turned the Germans back from the gates of Russia (hence the title) and also sounded the German death knell. This particular battle was fought soldier to soldier. Vassily is a simple country boy who knows his way around a rifle. Danilov sees him in action and decides the Russian soldiers need a hero, so he uses propaganda methods to promote Vassily into a war icon. Tania is also a soldier, and both Vassilyand Danilov fall in love with her. Enter the German sharpshooter, Koenig, an aristocrat from head to toe. The cat and mouse game has begun. Who will win?

The first half of the film will remind you of “Saving Private Ryan” and it is wrenching wartime drama. The war against Russia is taking much too long and the Germans are slowly being worn down. Ed Harris fits the role of Koenig. With his piercing blue eyes, he could probably stare an owl down at thirty paces. Jude Law is the weary soldier, shooting one man after another. Fiennes is frantic as the man charged with building a myth. Watch for Bob Hoskins as Nikita Khrushchev if you want mis-casting. There must be a romance in every film, so Rachel Weisz has the thankless job here. She does her best, but her role seems written in from another film.

“Enemy at the Gates” does give you the idea of what war was like then. This is a modern day siege in which armies did not wait years for the enemy to wear down, but wanted a defeat in days. Large bombs or small bullets, it didn’t matter. Whatever way wins the war.
