RETURN OF 'THE EXORCIST' REVIVES AWARENESS OF DEMONIC REALM
by Andy Butcher, Charisma Magazine
Rated R
Professionals as well as priests recognize reality of evil
The re-release of what has been dubbed "the scariest movie ever made"
has reawakened public awareness of demonic activity. As a new version of the
27-year-old "The Exorcist" fills theaters across the country, "Time"
magazine reports that the "all-but-abandoned church rite" is making
"a remarkable comeback."
With curious timing, the return of the terrifying film, loosely based on a
true account of possession, was preceded by reports of the pope's praying
to exorcise a teen-age girl in Rome, and the announcement of the Roman Catholic
Diocese of Chicago's appointment of a full-time exorcist.
According to Gabriele Amorth, the chief exorcist of the Rome archdiocese,
one of the reasons for the growing need for prayer for people to be set free
from demonic influence is the collapse of Western culture. "The majority
of people have lost their faith due to a materialistic and hedonistic lifestyle,"
he says, reported Fox News.
While skeptics dismiss demonic activity as superstition and misdiagnosed mental
illness, it is not only priests and pastors who are now talking about the
reality of the evil realm. Professional counselor Carolyn Carroll told "The
New York Post" about a frightening encounter she had with a woman she
was treating for multiple personality disorder.
The room "filled with a presence," and the lights dimmed. The woman
contorted her body, spoke in strange voices and told Carroll things about
the therapist's family "she could not possibly have known." Carroll
learned that her patient had been raised in a satanic cult and began to fast
and pray. Eventually the woman was set free.
"That experience made me realize that evil was real, that there were
intelligent spirit beings that could manifest themselves through people and
change their behavior," Carroll told the newspaper. "It's not a
figment of our imagination."
Although he performs around 25 exorcisms a year, James LeBar does not automatically
assume demonic activity. As a chaplain at a psychiatric hospital, he calls
in a psychiatrist and a medical doctor first. But, he told "Time,"
"there comes a point, when somebody is climbing up the wall or floating
on the ceiling or talking in a language they've never studied, when it's harder
to put in the 'psychological-problem' bin."
Condemned by Billy Graham when it was first released, the new edition of "The
Exorcist" includes restored footage that screenwriter William Peter Blatty
told "The Houston Chronicle" makes it closer to his original intention
and gives it "more of a moral and spiritual center." The senior
priest says that he believes the demonic attack took place "to make us
despair-to see ourselves as animal and ugly; to reject the possibility that
God could love us."
The October issue of "Charisma" magazine includes the testimony
of a woman bound by evil spirits through witchcraft and voodoo who now leads
a ministry helping others find freedom from spiritual bondage. A major report
on deliverance ministry was featured in the May issue of the magazine.
