THE EXORCIST (re-release)
3 1/2
Rated R
Website: www.theexorcist.net
"The Exorcist" is one of the all time, hands down, horror films of all times. I wonder if anyone realized William Peter Blatty’s novel would become a best seller and give rise to a film that film critics call a near masterpiece of storytelling. "The Exorcist" film was released in 1974, directed by William Friedkin and starred Jason Miller as the young priest caught up on a horrific spiritual experience, Max Von Sydow as a Jesuit priest who has performed exorcists and Ellen Burstyn as a film actress raising a daughter, Regan (Linda Blair). "The Exorcist" received ten Academy Award nominations and won for Best Adapted Screenplay and Sound. The film had two sequels, "The Exorcist II: The Heretic" in 1977 and "The Exorcist III" in 1990 with Blatty, himself directing. Neither sequel approached the heights of the original film.
The story concerns demonic possession and was shown through the body of a young girl. The pea-green vomit scene, levitation and head spinning were enough to frighten many moviegoers. New footage for the re-release has Regan in spider-stance crawling on all fours. The profane language and violence was part of the story of a girl who has an imaginary friend she calls "Captain Howdy." However, as time passes and Regan exhibits increasingly rude behavior, psychologists give up. What is a last resort is to call in an exorcist and there we meet Jason Miller of the brooding eyes. The priests won’t give up on Regan and the demon (devil) won’t give up on her either. The battle is in her bedroom with no holds barred. Winner takes all.
"The Exorcist" has excellent casting. Ellen Burstyn’s mother is frightened at what is happening to her daughter. Linda Blair’s Regan is a girl unprepared for the force that overtakes her. It is the priests, Miller and Sydow, who show the greatest concern. They know who they are dealing with and the weariness in their eyes shows the emotional and physical drain. This is a demon that knows their flaws and exposes them. Small wonder the screen adaptation held such power. Others in the cast were Lee J. Cobb, Kitty Winn and Jack MacGowan.
Horror films come and go, but "The Exorcist" lingers. Why? Perhaps it is the fear that demonic possession can happen. Loss of control is a prime fear, but loss of control to a demon? References can be made to "the demon rum" or "demon gambling", but in "The Exorcist" it was a real-come-from-somewhere-else demon. When one is lost to such an entity, can one ever be retrieved?
Be aware of profanity, violence, sexual references and child in peril in the context of an exorcism.
