Michael Caine breathed life into the character of Jack Carter in the 1971 film of "Get Carter." In the film, he was a Newcastle thug who went about avenging the death of his brother. In the 2000 remake, Sylvester Stallone ("CopLand") takes the role of Jack Carter, while Michael Caine is in the film as the owner of a club. The 1971 film was directed by George Armitage, and this time around, Stephen Kay ("The Last Time I Committed Suicide") is at the helm. The original novel was "Jack’s Return Home" by Ted Lewis.
The story has Jack living in Las Vegas and leaving town in a hurry when he hears of his brother’s death in Seattle. While there, Jack reconnects with his sister-in-law (Miranda Richardson from "Sleepy Hollow") and his niece (Rachel Leigh Cook from "She’s All That"). The women aren’t happy to see Jack. Where has he been all these years when they needed help? The longer Jack stays in Seattle, the more he believes his brother was murdered. How to go about proving it? The suspects include Alan Cumming ("Eyes Wide Shut") as a wily millionaire, Mickey Rourke ("The Rainmaker") as an evil gangster, Rhona Mitra ("The Hollow Man") as a more-than-close friend of the deceased brother, and Johnny Strong ("The Glimmer Man") as another criminal-type. Oh, yes, and there is Gretchen Mol ("Rounders") as a love interest for Jack.
"Get Carter" comes under the heading of "why did it have to be remade?" Once-a-classic-always-a-classic doesn’t seem to cover it anymore. Sylvester Stallone, complete with goatee, still doesn’t have the rawness Michael Caine had in the Seventies. Newcastle was a grit town and the film showed that. Now, Seattle is shown as wet, wet and wet. The atmosphere just isn’t right. It’s like having Jim Carrey do the Humphrey Bogart role in "The Maltese Falcon" and setting it in Johannesburg. There are car chases, even an inventive one involving Christmas trees. There are beatings—with Mickey Rourke, no less, and attempts at bonding—Jack and his niece. Yet, all the while you keep longing for Newcastle. Sigh. Stallone is adequate in the role, and the rest of the cast doesn’t have that much to do.
Be aware of violence, profanity, sexual scenes and drugs.
