GODZILLA 2000 2

Here comes one of the most famous monsters of filmdom, "Godzilla." This is a gigantic lizard who regularly stomped Japan in the 1950's and tackled such creatures as "Mothra" and "Smog Monster." "Godzilla 2000" isn't related to the 1998 "Godzilla" starring Matthew Broderick. No, that "Godzilla" is still sinking somewhere off Long Island looking like a dinosaur on mega vitamins. Now, we have director Takao Okawara, working from a screenplay by Hiroski Kashiwabara and Watani Minnura who brings us the monster on two legs (a guy in a monster suit) The ambiance of the "Godzilla" we remember is back.

The original "Godzilla" was the monster from the deep combined with a mysterious monster from anywhere. Earth tremors or disturbances in electrical fields usually heralded the big guy as he headed for land. An enormous foot squashed cars, claws swatted planes and "Godzilla" showed a bad attitude throughout the film. Psychologists today would say he had anti-society tendencies, but back then, was a releaser of tension for kids at Saturday matinees. "Godzilla" proved to be popular and film after film appeared, in fact over 20 and still counting. Who cares that special effects were almost nonexistent, English was dubbed or there were no popular movie stars. You came to see the big guy. There was a time when American stars, such as Raymond Burr (television's "Perry Mason") were in "Godzilla" films; such was the popularity of this genre.

"Godzilla 2000" has the usual storyline. The big guy is on another destroy-mission in Japan. He crunches electricity as we eat fries. Humans can't seem to do anything to stop him. However, lurking under the sea is a space craft (hint: not one of ours) that fights "Godzilla." Eventually, the craft changes into a monster and the battle of monsters begins. This "Godzilla" seems a bit shorter than before, but can still tromp anything in its path. There is even an attempt by the space alien to clone "Godzilla." Do space aliens have VCR's?

The special effects are modest, at best. You don't go to a "Godzilla" film expecting perfection. The dubbing is inadequate and some lines are downright humorous, but this is "Godzilla-land." Stars are Takeshiro Murata, Naomi Nishida, Mayu Suzuki, Hiroshi Abe, Shiro Sano and Tsutomu Kitagawa.

Japan has "Godzilla," Great Britain has James Bond and the United States has Jack Ryan. Wouldn't that be a film to have Bond join forces with Ryan and Tom Cruise ("Mission: Impossible") to battle "Godzilla?" Think that film would sell tickets?

"Godzilla 2000" has proved to be so popular; a continuation of "Godzilla" films is planned. Take the film with a grain of salt. Don't expect a superior product, but expect intended and unintended laughs. Be aware of monster violence and some profanity.
