The Life and Times of Hank Greenberg (1998) 3 1/2

Check archive for more films Even though this film was produced in 1998, it is still playing in theaters for short runs. Hank Greenberg was one of the premiere baseball players of his time. During the 1930's, he reigned as a Detroit Tigers hitter, even trying to top Babe Ruth's record. Greenberg was the first Jewish ball player in a major league team. A tall, handsome man, Greenberg, known affectionately as "Hammerin' Hank," gave notice to immigrants that anything in America was possible.

It is difficult to film a documentary without becoming mired in detail, but Aviva Kempner overcomes this with interviews with Greenberg's children, teammates and his friend, the late actor, Walter Matthau. We learn of Greenberg's love of the game of baseball and prejudices he endured, such as heckling or being spiked on the field. Greenberg took four years out to serve in the Army during World War II, enough though it meant stepping back from baseball fame.

Greenberg was the game's first one hundred thousand dollar player, which is peanuts by today's standards. Just as Greenberg retired, Jackie Robinson came to the forefront as the first black major league ball player, thus breaking another barrier. Even though you may not be a baseball fan, this film gives you insight to what goes into a major league sports figure, what he meant to fans and what happens after retirement. Greenberg went on to be affiliated with the Cleveland Indians and the White Sox.
