HIGHLANDER: ENDGAME - 1

"Highlander: Endgame" is the next in the line of "Highlander" films begun with Christopher Lambert in 1986. Then came "Highlander II: The Quickening" in 1991 and finally, "Highlander: The Final Dimension" in 1994. When Lambert was paired with Sean Connery as Ramirez, in the first two films, there was a bit of a spark, albeit, small, that nudged fantasy fans. The premise is of "immortals" that fight each other for longevity. Death is by beheading, whereupon you take the spirit of the deceased and it makes you stronger. Of course, in this "game," there can only be one left standing. At the rate this film series is going, the one left standing will be the ticket seller at the box office.
The television series of "Highlander" starring Adrian Paul achieved success. However, after having Paul fight off someone with a sword week after week, you began wondering where all these "immortals" came from anyway, cloning not being an issue. The fourth movie in this series, "Highlander: Endgame" pairs Christopher Lambert as Conner (from the first film), and Adrian Paul (from the television series) as Duncan. Now, that is a novel twist right there, the star of the film and the star of the television series appearing together. something like "Star Trek: Generations." This particular "Highlander" was directed by Douglas Aarniokoski from a script by Gillian Horvath and William N. Panzer.
The storyline flashes back and forth between the 1600's and other time periods and present time. Basically, the overacting villain Bruce Payne wants to take all the heads he can so he can be a super-duper immortal. He has a gang of biker-immortals who allow him to do this. Of course, Duncan and Connor don't want this, because good is supposed to win over evil, even though both sides have swords and fight like Jackie Chan who just ate haggis. The angst of being immortal while watching your loved ones die must be enormous. One television series, "Forever Knight" explored this from the viewpoint of a vampire. There is speculation about which of the two leads, Lambert or Paul, will remain with the film series. It doesn't take the I.Q. of Einstein to figure it out.
The love interest is Faith (Lisa Barbuscia.). Look for Jim Brynes from the television series. If you aren't familiar with this particular series, you will need a road map to follow it. Who really are the "immortals?" Why are they hacking away at their part of the universe to remain "immortal?" Where is a good acting coach when you need one?
The first "Highlander" film was average. The second barely average, the third fourth-rate and this one almost not there. One must have a reasonable plot to follow and "Highlander: Endgame" is confusing except for one thing, when you hear "swoosh," duck. Special effects are adequate. By the way, what is the current body count for trying to stay "immortal," and where does the film series go from here?
Be aware of extreme violence, language and strong sexual scenes.
