The Hollow Man 1 1/2

    Little did H. G. Wells realize when he wrote "The Invisible Man" that Hollywood would grasp the idea and run with it. From Abbott and Costello's "Meet the Invisible Man" to Chevy Chase and "Memoirs of an Invisible Man," the idea of being transparent is overwhelming. Enter writers Gary Scott Thompson and Andrew W. Marlowe who do a story complete with mad scientist, love story and special effects. Director Paul Verhoeven ("Robocop") pulls it together, but don't expect perfection.

    Kevin Bacon ("Stir of Echoes") plays brilliant scientist (aren't they all?) Sebastian Caine and his team are former love interest Elisabeth Shue
("Molly") and fellow scientist (her new love interest), Josh Brolin. The first minute of "Hollow Man" should have set the pace for the entire film.
An invisible predator stalks and devours a rodent. What is visible is a vague outline of bloody jaws.   Enough testing on animals, Caine wants to test the serum of invisibility on humans, but there is a draw back. Though the team managed to "bring back" a gorilla, can they do it on a man? Leave it to Sebastian to insist they go through with it and before you can say "Nobel Prize," Caine is fading from our sight in a special effects wonderworld.

    Being invisible is heady, indeed, for a man with an ego the size of Pennsylvania, but Sebastian slowly descends into brutality-madness when the team can't bring him back. Also, he discovers the affair between Josh and Elizabeth. The stalking begins and no one can see him.

    What could have been a first-class horror film ends up being a blood bath, especially one scene where blood is used to see Caine's footprints. Kevin Bacon is "there" for the film even though you don't see him. Shue and Brolin have no screen chemistry; in fact, Shue and Bacon have no screen chemistry.    Verhoeven tightens the screws with the team trapped in a lab while Bacon tries to eliminate them. Shades of "Alien."

    "The Hollow Man" is hollow, indeed.      A few words are uttered about lab animals and then it's off to another experiment.      Caine's
invisibility is the cloak of a mad man and what he can get away it.   Undoubtedly, this film may be in contention for an Oscar nomination, but
strictly for special effects.     Gore galore, including Caine's being graphically upset with a lab dog.   This film is not for the squeamish.

    "The Hollow Man" superficially explores what it is like not to be seen. Bacon's character calls himself "God" and means it.   What is not explored is man's need to be invisible. Is this the ultimate defense weapon? The film certainly earns an "R" rating for sexual scenes, nudity, language and graphic deaths.
