THE INTERVIEW   3
    Rated R

"The Interview" will remind one of "The Usual Suspects."  There are
crimes, police interrogations, but who is really interrogating whom?  This
film is an Australian production that is slowly entering the American market,
but is well worth seeing.  Scriptwriters Craig Monahan, Gordon Davis and
Alison Nisselle have done a concise job of showing what happens during a
police investigation.  Director Craig Monahan then takes the script he
co-wrote and breathes life into it on the screen.  Soundtrack by David
Hirschfelder ("Shine") and cinematography by Simon Duggan add immensely to
the film.

The story begins when police literally break into a man's (Hugo Weaving
from "The Matrix") apartment.  The audience is aghast?  What is the crime?
What police state is this, though for sure the accents are Australian.  The
handcuffed man soils himself and this starts sympathy for him.  What a
frightening situation to be in.  We then go to the police station where the
man is questioned, without food, for hours.  He seems confused, though the
lead detective (Tony Martin) is  quietly efficient.  The assistant detective
(Aaron Jeffery) is the opposite, though, blustery and tough.  The story
begins to unfold.  The man is brought in for questioning about a car theft
and soon he relaxes.  Car theft?  With some food, he can explain that.
Behind the scenes, we see the interview is being taped and other elements at
work.  The lead detective is under suspicion for not getting his man, the
assistant detective is talking behind his superior's back, there is an
unsavory newspaperman lurking in the hallways and what agenda does the top
police brass have, anyway?

"The Interview" begins as a sympathetic film.  Your sympathies are  for
the suspect.  As the story progresses, you begin to wonder who is the
criminal and who is the innocent party.  Does everyone have some guilt
connected with him or her? Does evil have a name and does it always have a
reason to kill?  Do police departments  have a free hand or are they hampered
by the thought of convicting an innocent man?  As you see, "The Interview"
goes into lofty material and mostly succeeds.  For American audiences, the
Australian accent may take a bit to understand.  American audiences are used
to crime films with detailed descriptions of everything.  Give a criminal a
gun and he's good for 10 minutes of dialogue.  This film, and it's to its
benefit, actually has a decreased amount of dialogue.  You can sit back and
think about what's happening on the screen.   The performances are right on
target with Weaving showing ranges from sympathetic to puzzled to confident.
Martin is the cool professional and Jeffery the  "I'm ready to fight" young
one on the team.  What does the word "innocent" really mean?  You decide.

    Beware of violence and profanity.
