"Into the Arms of Strangers" is a documentary
that addresses thequestion: would you give up your child? This premise
is presented to us by producer Deborah Oppenheimer (television's "The
Drew Carey Show") In 1938, just before World War II began,
Jewish families in Germany had the option of sending their children to families
in England for safety. 10,000 children from kindergarten age to high
school age were sent with one suitcase to safety across the English Channel.
One of these children was Oppenheimer's mother, Sylva. Actually, America
had been asked to taken the children, but debating in Congress delayed the
issue.
The story of five of the children is told simply in flashbacks.
Now, grandparents, the people speak of life in Germany before being sent away
and how they adjusted to life in a new society. There is generally
a happy tone here, as we see English families with barely enough food and
clothing for themselves, taking in children who had no hope of a future.
Language barriers were broken and customs adapted to such as the English 4
p.m. tea. The younger children had a better chance of fitting into
family circles. Teenagers were asked to help with housework, babysitting,
and with the boys, manual labor. A sad story is of one youth, who turned
17 in England, was classified as an "illegal," and sent aboard a
ship to Australia. The ship was bombed enroute and he barely escaped
with his life. When he arrived "down under," he promptly enlisted
in the British Army and was sent back to England. A poignant side story
is told of a young girl who was on the "kinder train," but as it
was beginning to leave the station, was pulled from the passenger car by her
father who just couldn't let her go. In years to come, the entire family
was in concentration camps and she was the only survivor. Many of the
families who allowed their children to go, actually did survive the war and
were united with the children later. Many did not survive and now the
English families are what the children remember. In a few cases, the
children bonded strongly with the English families and had difficulty adapting
to their own families after the War. It takes a special country to welcome
children who are innocent bystanders in a war and England showed its mettle
at that time.
