JURASSIC PARK III

“Jurassic Park III” is back with a flourish. Yes, Sam Neill (“Bicentennial Man”) takes over his role as the scientist who didn’t want dinosaur cloning to begin with and now has to contend with intelligent reptiles that want him for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Also in the cast are William H. Macy (“Fargo”), Tea Leoni (“The Family Man”), Alessando Nivola (“Face/Off”), newcomer Trevor Morgan and Michael Jeter (“The Green Mile.”) I wonder if author Michael Crichton realized how long-lived his novel, “Jurassic Park” would be? Steven Spielberg produced the film, which is directed by Joe Johnston (“October Sky.)

In this story, the island where dinosaur experimentation took place is a sealed area. This doesn’t stop thrill-seekers, though and one group gets marooned on that particular island. Neil is conned into a “fly-over” by a supposed group of tourists bend on a look, but this is actually a rescue mission and when the plane is disabled (by you-know-who), there are two stranded groups on the island. What to do? Not only are the usual suspects there, T-Rex and Velociraptor, but new guys on the block, the flying Pteranodon and the larger-and-meaner-than-T-Rex, Spinosaurus. See how the excitement escalates? Besides all the dinosaurs, from Comfrey’s gnawing your ankles, to T-Rex after your neck to Pteranodon swooping down from the sky, they have gotten smarter, too. Hmmm, can’t you see “Jurassic Park X?” Spinosaurus and friends take over Houston and blast off for Mars.

Actually, “Jurassic Park III” has a built-in audience and we know who we are. There is a fascination in things past….way past, in fact. If Darwin were alive, he would have a field day on this particular island. The film delivers plenty of action; practically non-stop once the group is airborne. Neill effectively does the “don’t-do-that” expression while rescuing anyone who needs help. It’s interesting to see William H. Macy in the jungle doing physical things instead of emoting in a contemporary drama such as “Panic.” He can do either with ease. The cast does what is expected of them and so do the reptiles. Laura Dern (“Jurassic Park”) makes a token appearance. Hang on to your theater seats and always the question, “What if?” drifts through the air. Dare we say, “Jurassic Park IV” is being developed somewhere?

The film is rated PG 13 for intense science fiction terror and violence.
