A KNIGHT’S TALE

“A Knight’s Tale” actually has a lot going for it. First of all, the film stars the latest heart-throb among teen girls, Heath Ledger (“The Patriot”), second, the story isn’t bad and third, neither is the acting. Writer/director Brian Helgeland (“L.A. Confidential”) sets his action story in medieval times when jousting was king. The dialogue is part ye olde English and part American-rock. Even jousters have to have love interests, and for Ledger it is newcomer Shannyn Sossamon. Ah, a villain, you say? Try Rufus Sewell (“Cold Comfort Farm”). The comic sidekicks are Mark Addy (“The Full Monty”) and Alan Tudyk, plus Paul Bettany as the character of Geoffrey Chaucer (yes, THE Chaucer of “Canterbury Tales.”)

The story has Ledger being the squire to a knight who is killed. Ledger wants to participate in jousting games so badly he can taste it, but he has to be born into nobility. Don’t let that stop you, though, and during his travels down the road; Ledger meets Chaucer (down on his luck here) who gives Heath a name, “Ulrich von Lichtenstein of Gelderland.” The character of Chaucer is a riot. Here he is a gambler, broke and is called “Geoff.” Ledger meets fair maiden Shannyn and begins to win jousting tournaments. Enter the villain and you can see the final match coming.

There is a clever part with the audience, as they cheer the participants on to “We Will RockYou.” There are other rock tunes in the film, also, as Heath trains to fight. Jousting wasn’t the most exciting sport around. You jump on your horse, run toward the other jouster and try to push them off their horse. One had to hope their horse wouldn’t veer off at the last moment, or that the other jouster wasn’t muddled from being hit on the head once too often and couldn’t see you.

Ledger is a good actor in this role. He has a clean-cut look about him and enough boyish charm for girls in the audience. Sossamon is a welcome newcomer; while Addy, Tudty and Bettany prove comedic timing was afoot in the 13th century, too. Sewell has the dark look of a villain and plays it to the hilt.

Be aware of fight violence, brief nudity and sexual language.
