LITTLE NICKY 1

"Little Nicky" is misnamed. It should be called "Little Icky" instead. Adam Sandler is a talented comic, but this film pushes the bounds of good taste right out the window. Sandler is also a co-writer (with Tim Herlihy and director Steven Brill) and should have gone through the jokes with a fine-tooth comb. What is funny about walking like a misshapen gnome and talking as though you had a mouth full of putty? Perhaps Sandler meant to remake"The Hunchback of Notre Dame" instead. Oh, well.

The story, such as it is, behind "Little Nicky" concerns the three sons of Satan (Harvey Keitel from "U-571." Nicky (Sandler) is the kind one, while older brothers Adrian (Rhys Ifans from "Notting Hill") and Cassius (Tommy �Tiny� Lister, Jr.) are rebellious. The older brothers escape from Hell and go to Earth to create their own kingdom and Nicky is sent to bring them back. Nicky has a friend to guide him, a bulldog named "Beefy" (voice of Robert Smigel). Part of the so-called humor is that "Beefy" does what dogs normally do chase girl dogs and stop at trees. Nicky doesn�t know what to do on Earth and has to learn the basic elements of society such as how to eat and falling in love (Patricia Arquette.) Costars in this film are in abundance and include Rodney Dangerfield (grandfather Lucifer), Dana Carvey, Jon Lovitz, Michael McKean, Quentin Tarentino, Henry Winkler, Reese Witherspoon, rocker Ozzy Osbourne and even the Harlem Globetrotters.

"Little Nicky" gives us a flat performance from Adam Sandler. Playing a nerd from Hell actually can be boring, and the smart remarks from the bulldog grow old in a hurry. Keitel must have wanted some fun in his life for taking this part. Ifans and Lister go over the top in their roles as the wayward brothers and the rest of the cast is there for box office appeal. The humor here is questionable as the audience takes a tour through Hell and sees who deserves what punishment (Hitler is included.) Special effects are barely adequate. Satan has a family that is supposed to observe family values? The boys are into heavy metal and dress appropriately. What else is new?

Be aware of humor involving sex, profanity, violence and jokes about lowering the drinking age to ten.
