"Lost Souls" deals with Satan coming to take over the world (again) and features Winona Ryder ("Autumn in New York") as the only person who knows this is going to happen. What else is new? The script comes from the pen of Pierce Gardner who doesn�t seize opportunities to sharpen dialogue; as a result you can tell what is coming. "Lost Souls" is directed by the noted cinematographer Janusz Kaminski ("Saving Private Ryan") making his directing debut. At least the camera work by Maura Fiore is topnotch.

"Lost Souls" starts with a virtually unrecognizable Ryder going with two priests, John Hurt and Elias Koteas, to an exorcism. It will be performed in a prison on a murderer. Ryder, has undergone an exorcism, hence her interest here, but once in the prison, the rite doesn�t go so well. The killer has a journal, Ryder figures out the code (always a code?) and decides the next person to be possessed will be well known author, Ben Chaplin.

Of course, Ben doesn�t believe Ryder. He is in a comfortable cocoon with his circle of friends, publisher and fans. However, it�s when his friend-circle begins to act strangely that Ben wonders if Ryder isn�t right after all. Ben has an irritating personality and doesn�t believe in God, perhaps just the type of person a demon could possess. How this entire situation is resolved is a let down.

Winona Ryder wanders through "Lost Souls" as does Ben Chaplin. You just know they are acting up a storm, but it is acting. John Hurt is Ryder�s mentor, who is ill through the film, but his scenes come to life. There are a few visual scenes that are effective, including the one with Ryder�s bathroom wall and that of people gathering for a sort of black mass. The soundtrack by Jan Kaczmarek is appropriately slashing as befits the mood of the film.

Be aware of violence, profanity and visual scenes of demon possession.
