Oh, John Travolta, what happened? The disastrous "Battlefield Earth" did nothing for science fiction or your recreation of an alien being. Now, "Lucky Numbers" is an attempt at humor, but the film falls flatter than the proverbial pancake. Costar Lisa Kudrow ("The Opposite of Sex"), who has good comedic timing, tries in vain to get through the film, and Tim Roth (the wonderful "The Legend of 1900") is barely there. Screenwriter Adam Resnick (from "The David Letterman Show") has a convoluted script and that didn�t leave director Nora Ephron ("You�ve Got Mail") much to work with.

"Lucky Numbers" is a story of greed and this one is centered on the Pennsylvania State Lottery. Travolta is a TV weatherman (it�s about 1988 or so) who has a local fan group and perks wherever he goes. Travolta�s girlfriend is Kudrow, the television station�s "lottery girl," you know, the one who takes the white balls out of the spinning basket. Travolta, who is in debt, and his friend, Tim Roth, devise a way to get the winning lottery ball with the help of Kudrow. Of course, everything goes wrong as the word spreads and more people want in on the action. The supporting cast includes Michael Rapaport ("Deep Blue Sea"), Ed O�Neill (from television�s "Married With Children"), Daryl Mitchell (television�s "Veronica�s Closet") and documentary filmmaker Michael Moore. This story is loosely based on a Pennsylvania scandal about 1980 concerning wrongdoing within the state lottery system.

John Travolta overreacts to situations in such a way you can have no sympathy for his character. Lisa Kudrow plays the lottery girl as an empty-headed lottery ball. Tim Roth, who could chew the scenery if he wanted to, stands in the background. As a result, "Lucky Numbers" is reduced to "Unlucky Number" in this year�s line of films.
