LUMINOUS MOTION 2 1/2
No rating
Website: www.artlic.com/films/luminous.html
"Luminous Motion" is a largely unnoticed film going from film festival to film festival. The story has a twist to it and involves a little boy and his mother—rather like a contemporary version of "The Bad Seed." Director Bette Gordon ("Variety") has taken an unusual subject and brought depth to the idea of mother-son relationships. The film is from the novel, "The History of Luminous Motion" by Scott Bradford.
Deborah Kara Unger ("Crash") stars as the mother, with Eric Lloyd as her son, Phillip. The two are on the run and go from cheap motel to sleeping in the car, a beat-up Red Impala. Phillip adores his mother and puts up with the various men in her life. He’s a smart kid and can outthink the men with a withering glance. Phillip hallucinates, though, and speaks to his father (Jamey Sheridan), who really does catch up with the pair. This is after an encounter Mom and Phillip have with the friendly handyman, Pedro (Terry Kinney.) Phillip is confused. He wants to be in constant "luminous motion" with his mother, but she wants to settle down. Phillip’s new friends, a punk crook and his girlfriend, aren’t much help. It’s unsettling to see how Phillip goes about solving his problems.
"Luminous Motion" presents Deborah Kara Unger another chance to do a dangerous type role. It’s like "Mary Poppins" on speed. As the mother, Unger can’t stop moving and when she does, falls into a drunken stupor and sleeps the days away. Eric Lloyd is a "cute as a button" ten-year-old until he decides to do things his own way. He has no notion of right and wrong because on the road with Mom taught him that being with her was "right" even to stealing television sets from motel rooms. "Wrong" was not being on the road and in constant motion. When Dad enters the picture, Phillip is confused. Is this a man to trust? Sheridan does an adequate job as the father who tries to understand his son. Terry Kinney, also, tries to understand Phillip, and his dream appearances are unnerving.
"Luminous Motion" begins in one direction and then leads you down entirely different roads. The murky waters of who is right and who is wrong, impressionable children and mothers who put themselves first makes for a memorable film.
Be aware of profanity, violence, sexual situations and substance abuse, oh, yes, and scenes of drinking and driving.
