"Meet the Parents" is one of the funniest films of the 2000 season. With Robert DeNiro ("Ronin") as the future father-in-law and Ben Stiller ("There’s Something About Mary") as the prospective son-in-law, you can expect just about anything. Blythe Danner is the future mother-in-law and Teri Polo (television’s "Felicity") is the fiancée. Director Jay Roach ("Austin Powers"), working from a script by Jim Herzfeld and John Hamburg, knows how to let the high-powered actor, De Niro do his thing, and as a result this comedy is well done.
The premise has Stiller as a guy named Focker (better pronounce that correctly) who is a male nurse. Right away, you can see the borderline humor here. He is in love with Teri. When Teri’s sister (Debbie DeHuff) gets married, Teri decides to invite Stiller to the wedding—and to meet her family. The whole thing falls apart. First, Stiller realizes he isn’t the only one Teri has ever invited home to meet the family. Second, Mom is a nervous wreck while Dad turns out to be some kind of CIA man who always gets the confession. When De Niro walks around holding his pet cat, you think of any of the villains in the James Bond series who always had a cat in arm. Enter a former fiancé, (Owen Wilson) and there is trouble. Not to mention the fact that Stiller is Jewish and the rest of the family definitely WASP.
"Meet the Parents" gets laughs from just about anything. Starting from the first scene where Stiller is practicing his proposal to an elderly patient to losing his luggage to having to say "grace" at the table and not knowing a Christian prayer (Stiller starts on "Day By Day" from "Godspell") to trying to open a champagne bottle to that pesky cat-everything goes wrong.
Ben Stiller is the right actor for his role of Focker. A Jim Carrey would have been way over the top. De Niro has his deadpan comedy touches as in "Analyze This" and Danner does her thing as the Mom quietly coming apart. Teri Polo, however, is too soft in the role—like whipped cream on biscotti. Owen Wilson’s "ex" is Mr. Perfect all the way and thinks Jesus is a good role model. The cat steals its scenes.
"Meet the Parents" is a lot of fun. Married’s have all gone through this and most with disastrous results, though, perhaps not with that unusual last name. With Stiller as your male nurse, you would be frightened into wellness.
Be aware of language and crude humor, plus simulated animal antics.
