"Men of Honor" shows us what a tough time being in the military can be. Women saw it in Demi Moore’s "G. I. Jane" and now we see it as a racial issue when Cuba Gooding, Jr. ("Jerry Maguire") tries to move up in the U. S. Navy and become a Master Diver. Moving Mt. Rushmore would be easy compared to what Gooding goes through as Carl Brashear with Robert De Niro as his tough-as-nails leader, Billy Sunday. This film is based on the life of Brashear and was originally called "Navy Diver."
The film has you cheering for Carl from Day One. He is the son of a poor sharecropper and when an opportunity to improve comes with enlisting in the Navy, so be it. However, once on board, Carl realizes blacks are relegated to being cooks, in fact, the nickname "Cookie" follows him throughout life. Carl is a great swimmer, though, and soon his ability is recognized and slowly but surely, he begins to climb the ranks to be what he wants to be: a Master Diver. Robert De Niro is such a profanity-spouting character; you may end up covering your ears by the end of the movie. Foul language is the prod he uses to get the men to perform beyond their endurance. As a navy diver, you are a salvage expert and one slip makes you or your men history. Carl reaches top form when a freak accident robs him of the use of one leg. The Navy wants to retire him, but Carl is determined to go back to active duty. This has never been done before. Can a one-legged man perform as well as one with two legs?
"Men of Honor" hits you over the head right and left with righteous indignation. Carl is thwarted at every more to keep from reaching his goal, but the man has stainless steel for a backbone. As portrayed by Cuba Gooding, Jr., Brashear is too good to be true. Robert De Niro’s portrayal of an obnoxious, hard-drinking character, married to a younger woman (Charlize Theron) makes you want to push him overboard. There is nothing likable here until you begin to see the racist people he works with such as Hal Holbrook as the Camp’s Commander who treasures his pug dog above all. Carl’s one friend through this ordeal is Michael Rapaport who is shunned by others because of a stuttering problem.
"Men of Honor" raises questions concerning the Navy and the military in general. Can people of color achieve the same as a white person? Are the barriers still in place? An explored story that would make a good movie is Carl’s romance with a librarian/medical student (newcomer Aunjanue Ellis). Does she have problems becoming a black woman doctor? This is never addressed. The underwater sequences are well-photographed including Carl’s encounter with an enemy submarine. I still have goose bumps. The film is rated "R" for violence and profanity. By the way, it is salvage divers such as the navy trains, who worked on the sunken Russian submarine that went down in August 2000.
Be aware of intense profanity, racial slurs and fight scenes.
