"Mercy Streets" is a feature length motion picture with a decidedly Christian theme. The film is done better than last years "The Omega Code" in that writer/director Jon Gunn has a firm grip on the quality production. "Mercy Streets" is another in a line of Christian-oriented films to come into the mainstream motion picture market. Yet to come is "Left Behind" from the popular book series.
The story of "Mercy Streets" follows twin brothers (played by David White) who are tragically separated in their teens. One brother, John, enters the world of crime and ends up in prison. The other brother, Jeremiah (also David White) studies to be an Episcopalian priest. The men are at a critical time in their lives—John is out of prison but enticed to do one more job for his friend, Rome (Eric Roberts from "Runaway Train")—and Jeremiah is on a guilt trip because he believes he killed his brother years ago. John does the crime but takes the money and runs to his brother. In the meantime, Rome and his accomplice TJ (Robert LaSardo) chase John but end up kidnapping the wrong brother. Now the interesting part begins: John has to pose as a priest and Jeremiah is introduced to the world of crime. John, as a member of the clergy, also has to contend with Jeremiah’s girlfriend, Sam (Cynthia Watros). Will she suspect anything is wrong?
The use of professional actors such as Eric Roberts is a definite plus to a film that will have a Christian atmosphere. Roberts steals his scenes as the bad guy with Robert LaSardo as his sidekick and David White does both brothers well. However, Cynthia Watros as Jeremiah’s girlfriend fades into the background. The soundtrack which includes selections by Sixpence None and Moby is an asset to the film and should prove to be a popular seller by itself.
Crossover films keep getting better and better. Forgiveness is there for everyone. The film mixes a good storyline with a solution—God. For people who are not regular churchgoers, "Mercy Streets" is just the right film to invite your friends to attend. There is a story, a point to the story and a life of robbing, lying, cheating, disrespect and on and on, is not the lifestyle of choice. Jon Gunn has used the idea of twin brothers, separated at a crucial age, to tell a story bringing Christian values to the forefront. One can only hope his next project comes along soon.
"Mercy Streets" certainly will keep your interest. Since the world of crime is involved, there are scenes of violence such as a face slapping, a fight scene, allusions to a murder and a shoot-out that ends up being part of a scam. Profanity is of the "Go to hell" type, smoking a cigarette and wine are part of the story and a kissing scene.
