“The Mummy Returns” just about says it all. The remake of “The Mummy” two years ago was a surprise hit and of course, there must be two, so Hollywood dug into it’s crypt of scripts and came up with “Return.” The same stars are back with one addition: Freddie Boath, who plays the son of Brendan Fraser and Rachel Weisz. Arnold Vosloo reprises his role as the mummy, Patricia Velasquez is his princess, Oded Fehr is one of the good guys and somewhere in the cast is the acting debut of a television wrestler, “The Rock.” (Dwayne Johnson).

The storyline of “The Mummy Returns” is set ten years after the mummy was destroyed, eh, let’s makethat supposedly destroyed. Fraser and Weisz are married, have a son and now live in London. Rachel begins to dream of ancient Egypt. A sign, you say? A subversive cult wants to bring the mummy back (no tanna leaves, though), another cult wants to prevent the mummy from coming back and Fraser’s family is in the middle. You can just about guess what happens. Don’t try to understand the plot, though, just go with the flow.

There are so many special effects in this film, just sit back, munch your popcorn and relax. There are beetles that kill, walking skeletons, falling and re-attached body parts. Weisz and the princess pair off on quite a fight. Everyone ends up in a brawl every few minutes. The acting is fairly well done by the professionals, but if you come to this film to see “The Rock,” don’t blink your eyes. He’s on screen about that length of time. Also, barely any dialogue for him, so does this give you a clue about his upcoming role in “The Scorpion King,” a prequel to “Mummy?”

All in all, “The Mummy Returns” will make film fans happy. It is escapism with a capital “E” and delivers entertainment. The film was written and directed by Stephen Sommers.
