THE PATRIOT 2 Rated R
Mel Gibson ("Lethal Weapon 4") and Heath Ledger ("10 Things I Hate About You") are the stars of "The Patriot." Director Roland Emmerich ("Independence Day") has a film with 30 minutes of intense emotion, 30 minutes of battle scenes, and an hour and a half of variety. The scene is Revolutionary War time and this period is just before General Cornwallis and his major defeats. The colonists are putting together an army to fight the British, the French have allied themselves with the colonists and Mel Gibson is trying to lead a peaceful home life with his seven children. All in a day’s work.
"The Patriot" has Gibson as Benjamin Martin, a hero of previous wars on the new soil. He has married, fathered several children, his wife’s died and he is trying to keep the family plantation in South Carolina together. Enter the War, which rapidly approaches his property. Ben’s eldest son (Ledger) enlists against family opposition and soon proves himself a worthy soldier. The next son wants to join, but Ben keeps him on the homestead. While sheltering wounded soldiers, the British come onto to the property headed by the evil Tavington (Jason Isaacs) who shoots and torches the farm. This does it; Ben is now at war and out come his deadly armaments from previous battles, especially a Cherokee hatchet.
The Walt Disney group had a television series about 30 years ago called "The Swamp Fox," with Leslie Nielsen as the renegade American fighting the British in the southern swamps. Now, Gibson is called "The Ghost" because he uses guerilla tactics and can’t be caught. The battles are bloody, women stay in the background and children are taught to fire muskets and kill people. On the other hand, this film has humorous moments concerning the pride filled General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkerson) and a pair of Great Danes the king gave him who now like "The Ghost" better. See what I mean about uneven storylines? The script by Robert Rodat ("Saving Private Ryan") doesn’t seem to know if it should be straight drama (the death of a son) or humorous (staging a hostage situation for Cornwallis.).
"The Patriot" should have been a strong film about the birth of our country; instead Mel Gibson has an imitation "Braveheart". Rally the troops, stirring speeches and wave the banner/flag. Gibson can do a war film with ease. Imagine him at the time of the Crusades or in ancient Egypt. This guy can last forever with the theme of liberty. Aside from wild Mel, the supporting cast does well including Isaacs as the evil British officer and Wilkerson as the vanity-prone Cornwallis. Joely Richardson plays Mel’s sister-in-law who is always there to help with the children, and cute kids they are. This War freed our country and it was a war of conventional battle methods of that time (armies march at each other) and sneak attacks in the forest. "Take no prisoners," was a rule of the war game.
Be aware, "The Patriot" is rated R for intense violence. There are battle amputations and decapitations, children in peril, "Mad Mel" on the warpath, houses burned and one scene that did not happen in real life-the burning of a church with townspeople inside.
