"Pay It Forward" is the film adaptation of a recent best selling novel by Catherine Ryan Hyde about befriending the world. If Haley Joel Osment ("The Sixth Sense") can’t do it, no one can. Director Mimi Leder ("Deep Impact") has left the world of action films and come to a people-oriented theme concerning a boy, his mother and the boy’s teacher. Scriptwriter Leslie Dixon gives us a film of unusual kindnesses and their aftermath. Helen Hunt ("As Good As It Gets") is Haley’s mother and Kevin Spacey ("American Beauty") is his teacher.
The story has to do with "paying something forward," that is doing a kindness that is a random act, or something no one suspects will happen. Spacey is a teacher who readily has dictionaries for his students and doesn’t talk down to them. Haley is a boy without a father. Helen works two jobs to keep herself and Haley together and has to avoid situations where alcohol is present. When the idea of "paying something forward" is presented, Haley takes it to heart and before you know it, Helen has a homeless man (Jim Caviezel from "Frequency") living in her garage. As you can predict, Helen and Kevin find each other but the going isn’t smooth. She looks like a frazzled, frazzled Mom and he has scars on his face he’d rather not talk about. Oh, yes, and then there is Jon Bon Jovi as Haley’s real father who shows up at unexpected times. Jay Mohr ("Jerry Maguire") is a reporter who is chasing down the story of people doing random kindnesses and Angie Dickinson (unrecognizable) is a homeless woman. The story is set in Las Vegas.
The idea of random kindnesses is a winner in itself. Even something so small as a smile at a checkout line or someone with a large cart of groceries and you with a loaf of bread, letting you go ahead in line—it’s all appreciated. For people who read the book, the change will be in the main character. The teacher in the book is a black Vietnam veteran. Hollywood always changes things for their own reasons. Anyway, Haley Joel Osment once again proves he is a premiere child star. Helen Hunt is an actress not afraid to look dowdy on screen for her role as the overworked mother and Kevin Spacey is a man within his own shell, but oh, what he is missing in life.
Be aware of sexual situations, some violence, substance abuse and adult language.
