RED PLANET 2
Rated PG 13
Website: www.redplanetmovie.com
It’s fifty years into the future and Earth is gasping its last. We’ve finally done it depleted our natural resources. Terraforming is now being done on Mars in hopes of colonization, when something goes wrong on that distant planet. Such is the premise of "Red Planet" starring Val Kilmer ("Heat"), Tom Sizemore ("Saving Private Ryan") and Carrie-Anne Moss ("The Matrix.") First time director Anthony Hoffman, who has a Masters in Cinematography, knows how to frame a picture and that’s what "Red Planet" ends up being a study in photography by Peter Suschitzky. Writers Chuck Pfarrer ("The Jackal") and Jonathan Lemkin ("The Devil’s Advocate") have given the actors banal dialogue.
The story has an exploratory ship going to Mars to find out what went wrong with the project. Kilmer is the mechanic and low man on the totem pole, therefore nicknamed "the janitor" by the crew. Sizemore is the head scientist, Moss is the mission commander, and Benjamin Bratt (television’s "Law and Order"), Terence Stamp ("The Limey") and Simon Baker ("Ride With The Devil") are also present with various skills.
The crew manages the six month long voyage and starts the descent onto the planet with Moss remaining on board the main ship. Boy, do the guys have a landing. They start out for a supply station and this is where problems start. Personalities clash, the environment is incredibly hostile and a major robotic catlike implement turns downright mean (think "HAL" from "2001 Space Odyssey.") Moss is ordered to return to Earth, but she decides to hang in there and save the crew.
"Red Planet" does have an interesting premise and the photography is Mars-like, but the situations are actually dull. Another rescue mission film? Aren’t these space jockeys given psychological profiles back on Earth? Warning: there is a hint, though barely, of life on Mars. The robot-gone-awry looks like a starved cougar. Given bland dialogue, the actors plod through their roles. Which is unfortunate, because the talent presented here given the opportunity could have made "Red Planet" quite a psychological film. As it stands, the film will end up being "Red-faced Planet." When you put "Mission to Mars" side by side with "Red Planet," "Mission" comes out on top.
Be aware of profanity and violence.
