"Remember the Titans" has three things going for it right off the
bat, er, pigskin. The film is about football, and it stars Denzel Washington
("The Hurricane") and Will Patton ("Armageddon.")
"Titans" is based on a true-life story of what happened in Alexandria,
VA (1972) when an all black high school was integrated with an all white high
school. Director Boaz Yakim ("A Price Above Rubies") does
a first rate job of pulling the story together from a script by Gregory Allen
Howard.
In Alexandria, football meant everything to the town.
However, schools were not integrated. When the school board was forced
to integrate an all black high school with an all white one, one can imagine
the problems. The situation intensified when the T. C. Williams High School
Titans ended up with a black coach, Herman Boone (Washington) with the previous
coach, Bill Yoast (Patton) as an assistant. How to pull the team and
the town together? Well, Denzel Washington doesn't make films about
hardships for nothing
(remember "Glory?") so begins, in his quiet way, to blend the team
into a fighting whole. Can he sustain it, though? Will Boone have
a friend or enemy in Yoast? As teammates begin new friendships, what
does this do to the town?
"Remember the Titans" takes the audience on a
journey of coexisting, right along with the team and town. Boone has a job
cut out for him and does it by being hard on the players. This causes
problems as the players start to learn who they really are. Can they
take it or not? What is winning all about? It is getting a touchdown
or playing as a team? The story tends to be predictable. As with
any sports film, there must be a major accident and racially motivated incidents.
This isn't a perfect world. Washington turns in another good performance
and Patton, the same. Supporting players include Donald Faison (television's
"Felicity"), Wood Harris (Showtime's "Hendrix"), Ryan
Hurst ("Patch Adams"), Ethan Suplee ("American History X"),
Nicole Ari Parker ("Blue Streak") and Kate Bosworth ("The Horse
Whisperer.")
"Remember the Titans" with profanity and a same-sex
kiss, could easily have a "PG 13" rating instead of "PG."
We see that Coach Boone views the football field as a place for his personal
battles and his values of hard work and respecting talent. By taking
the team to practice near Gettysburg, the message of the Civil War and why
it was fought is brought to the players. As for the real coaches, Boone
and Yoast, they are both retired now and both men are golfers.
Be aware of profanity, same-sex kiss and racial comments.
