"Road to Redemption" is the latest film from World Wide Pictures, Inc., the motion picture ministry of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. The story has many people traveling on their own special road leading to salvation. Some take longer than others to make their destination. Writer/director Robert Vernon ("Fatal Addiction") offers the audience the story of Amanda (Julie Condra) and her boyfriend, Alan (Kansas City actor Jay Underwood), plus Amanda’s grandfather, Nathan (veteran actor Pat Hingle from the "Batman" films.)
Amanda and Alan live together and are in debt. She takes money from her boss, Sully (Leo Rossi) and gambles, hoping to win. However, the money is lost. Sully doesn’t know who took the money, so this gives Amanda time to visit her grandfather, Nathan, who she hasn’t seen in years. She hopes Nathan will lend her the money, a cool $250,000 no less. In the meantime, Sully figures out who took the money and because Amanda is gone, grabs Alan. Amanda and Nathan come to an agreement. He will give her the money if she accompanies him on a fishing trip to Montana. On the road they go, with Alan and the crooks in pursuit. Amanda thinks she knows everything about Nathan, but she missed something important. Alan is tired of taking punches from the crooks, Vincent (Tony Longo) and Frank (Wes Studi), and comes to the conclusion; if you can’t fight them, join them. What will happen?
"Road to Redemption" has adequate production values, but would have done better as a made-for-television movie. There is a humorous part where Amanda’s car breaks down and she is given a ride by a group of Christian motorcyclists. One wears a patch that says, "Satan Is A Punk." There is comic violence, but it comes from slapstick that is reminiscent of the "Roadrunner" cartoons. Since there is a crime element involved, there are guns. No nudity or profanity, but I object to people driving at high rates of speed down the highway, no buckled up seat belt in sight, talking to people in the backseat or reading, totaling their car and then walking away without a scratch. What is wrong here?
The Christian aspect of the film is well brought out with scenes such as Gramps favorite radio program at noon being a Christian broadcast. Amanda is rebellious against religion, but finally has a moment when she lets go and asks God for help. The crooks? Well, wait until the very end of the film—amid the closing credits—to find out what happens to them. The phrase, "captive audience," comes to mind.
"Road to Redemption" is a mainstream Christian film the family could go to, but be aware of the fact that Amanda and Alan are living together, comic violence, driving erratically, gambling on horses, and crooks with guns.
