It seems as thought I’ve spent my summer vacation writing about movie sequels. Well, here we go again. “Rush Hour 2” with Jackie Chan (“Shanghai Noon”) and Chris Tucker (“Money Talks”) is here and somewhere in Hollywood someone is probably thinking of yet another sequel in this genre. The setting is Hong Kong where Jackie feels at home and Chris is the fish out of water. Brett Ratner (“The Family Man”) directs from a script by Jeff Nathanson. The cast includes Zhang Ziyi (“Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”) and John Lone.

OK, so there is an all-star cast here. What about the plot? Chan and Tucker reprise their roles as a Chief Inspector of the Royal Hong Kong Police and an American LAPD detective. The guys are in Hong Kong for a vacation and as Jackie Chan puts it, “In Hong Kong, I am Michael Jackson and you are Toto.” Eventually, the guys end up with a case involving an explosion that killed two U. S. customs agents and the production of counterfeit money. The villain is Lone, who leads the meanest gang in China. The girls are Roselyn Sanchez, who plays a secret service agent, and Ziyi, who is Lone’s henchperson. Martial arts are what people want from a Jackie Chan film and they do get it here from a massage parlor to a bar to a casino.

Why not let Chris Tucker have the entire film for himself and title it, “Rush Hour 1 ½?” His over-acting is reminiscent of a stand-up comic on opening night-frantic. As far as acting is concerned, Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker do manage to mesh as a team. “Rush Hour” would seem to have been the peak, though, as Tucker brazens his way through his scenes and he’s in most of the film. You will notice Zhang Ziyi and no one can dim her star. Chan is always appreciated on camera and be sure and stay through the final credits of the film when outtakes are shown. This is the best part of the film.

“Rush Hour 2” is rated PG 13 for violence, language and some sexual material.
