“The Score” is an action thriller starring Robert DeNiro (“Ronin”), Edward Norton (“Keeping the Faith”), Angela Bassett (“Music of the Heart”) and Marlon Brando (“Don Juan De Marco”). Who directs this all-star cast who practically direct themselves? Frank Oz (“Bowfinger.”) The idea follows the planning and execution of a big heist, ho hum, not this again?

In the story, DeNiro is going to retire from crime. Girlfriend Bassett wants him to keep on with his legitimate business, a nightclub in Montreal. However, there is a fly in every ointment and Brando, DeNiro’s fence, persuades him to do one last job and take a partner—Edward Norton. Now, DeNiro has always worked alone, so how to handle a partner who is young and eager? The idea is to break into Montreal’s customs house and steal a priceless art object. Norton has a job there as a janitor, everyone thinks he’s dim-witted, so he can eavesdrop with ease. Will this plan work? Can opposites work together?

“The Score” has Robert DeNiro playing someone so in control, you may be afraid to crack a smile in the movie theater. Anyone looser than he constitutes a loose cannon. On the other hand, Norton does his “Primal Fear” character here as the person you would least suspect could plan a robbery. Bassett, unfortunately,is window dressing in the film, though she shares top billing. Brando is on screen about eight minutes and those are the best part of the film. He is surrounded by blue in his scenes so you can’t miss him. The man catches your attention AND holds it. The guy hasn’t lost his acting touch. Tension builds without violence oozing all over the place.

Dare I say this film has performances you can notice instead of special effects? A rarity, indeed. However, be aware that the story takes place in basements and the lighting isn’t all that great, plus the story is one big build-up for the heist. I guess, when you have DeNiro and Norton on screen together, they could read a telephone directory and find a plot in there somewhere.
