    "Space Cowboys" just about tells it all.   Instead of saving the fort from attack, the "rangers" now try to save humanity from a satellite.  The
plot isn't new, but how we get there makes the difference.  Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven"), Tommy Lee Jones ("Double Jeopardy"), Donald Sutherland ("Instinct") and James Garner ("Twilight") star in a film about aging astronauts who are given a chance to go into space.  Eastwood also directs this film and gives it kind of a loving pat.  John Glenn didn't have to rescue anyone when he went into space a few years ago, but he gave a boost to the AARP generation.  The script is by Ken Kaufman ("The Air Up There") and Howard A. Klausner.

    The story begins when the four stars are young test pilots and bound for space.  However, a chimp beats them and they are pushed aside.  Forty years pass and a Russian satellite is having communications problems.  The design is by Eastwood and logically, he is the only one who can fix it, but how to get this aging man into space?  Well, Eastwood has an idea.  Put together his old team and they can do the job.  After all, what do they have to lose? This makes for hilarious moments as the men try to get fit for the trip, competing with younger astronauts Loren Dean ("Enemy of the State") and Courtney B. Vance ("Cookie's Fortune").  Marcia Gay Harden ("Meet Joe Black") is Tommy Lee Jones love interest and James Cromwell ("The Green Mile") is the on-ground commander.  The crew finally gets into space and docks with the
satellite, but things aren't what they've been told.  What to do?

    "Space Cowboys" has a lot going for it.  Not only is this a stellar cast who make acting look effortless, but also the special effects and direction are good.  There is good-natured camaraderie (Sutherland's teeth) in the group though they take their share of hazing from the younger crewmembers.  Jones and Eastwood try to outdo each other in everything and this also adds to the merriment.  Boys will be boys.

    I liked "Space Cowboys," even though all the cliches (medical tests) are there.  It's interesting to see how the script works around them.  The
shuttle shots are wonderfully done.  The point is made that you are never too old to learn or work at a task.   Commitment to a project until completion is stressed,  as is working as a team even though there are differences.  Be aware of partial male nudity, a vomit scene and mild profanity.
