SPY GAME 3
Rated R for violence, profanity and sexual scenes.
Universal Pictures - Website: www.spygame.com
“Spy Game” has Robert Redford battling
the establishment again. He was last seen fighting James Gandolfini
in “The Last Castle” and now has to rescue Brad Pitt and dodge those nasty
government inquisitors at the same time. Director Tony Scott (“Enemy of
the State”) puts his particular stamp on this film with long photogenic
vistas and precise editing. Screenwriters Michael Frost Beckner and David
Arata have put together astory about friendship, rescue, loyalty and even
retirement---all in one film.
The story
is told in flashbacks. Trailers would have you think this is one long
rescue film, bit it isn’t. Redford is retiring and on his last day, is called
into a high powered conference to be told his old friend, Brad Pitt, is now
in a Chinese prison and was caught spying. Redford recruited Pitt as a sniper
about 1975. Redford liked Pitt’s easy style and enticed him to work
for a covert government agency as a top spy. The two went through several
adventures with the same idea---no close ties. It’s when they are
assignment in Beirut and Pitt falls for Catherine McCormack, a Brit (who can’t
go home because she helped bomb a building in England) that trouble begins.
Pitt thinks he can have it all---the girl and his job---but Redford
says, “No way.” They part company. Go forward several years
and Redford is on the carpet for his past ties to Pitt. Can he do anything
to help? Just what is the current Chinese situation? What are
the repercussions of any help?
“Spy Game”
is a lush film with plenty of atmosphere (shot on location in England, Budapest
and Morocco). Photography by Dan Mindel is spectacular, especially the
aerial shots. Composer Harry Gregson-Williams carries the theme through
with a riveting soundtrack that pulsates with action. However, the film
is about 15 minutes too long. We don’t need so much detail in how
the guys set up their operations or the fact that Redford has so many friends
in high places. Marianne Jean-Baptiste (“Secrets and Lies”) has
a great role as Redford’s secretary, Gladys, and one wishes this would be
an enlarged role, but, alas, she comes off as the Girl Friday.
The camaraderie
and off-screen friendship of Robert Redford and Brad Pitt (both from “A
River RunsThrough It’) carries through on screen and the result is a believable
mix of two guys who understand each other even when they don’t want to.
The word “loyalty” means something to them and that’s what Redford
saw in Pitt. That old school loyalty that the new school doesn’t recognize.
Even though the supporting cast of Stephen Dillane (“Welcome to Sarajevo”)
and Larry Bryggman (“Richard III” and for soap opera fans, John Dixon
from “As The World Turns”) try, they can’t touch super-Redford
as he goes about his game-behind-the-scenes. This is chess where you
can see the winner a mile away. If spying were this obvious, a third-grader
could do it.
