SWORDFISH

“Swordfish” is the hit film John Travolta (“Battlefield Earth”) is looking for and he may have found it. This is an action-packed thriller about hackers and government agents. Director Dominic Sena (“Gone in 60 Seconds”) has a flair for car chases and goes all out. Also in the cast are Hugh Jackman (“The X-Men”), Halle Berry and Don Cheadle (“Mission to Mars.”)

The plot has Travolta (lean and mean) as a top-secret government agent who wants to rob the government of several billion dollars. He needs a top-notch hacker to do this and zeroes in on Jackman, an ex-con who lost custody of his daughter to his ex-wife. Travolta sends Berry to persuade Jackman to do the job, in exchange for enough money to get custody ot the child. Cheadle plays an F.B.I.detective. There are tense moments, the “will-they-or-won’t-they” suspense of a carefully planned robbery, car chases, Halle Berry in skimpy outfits, helicopter rides and it all boils down to action.

“Swordfish” is better than I expected. The film actually starts with the robbery and then goes backward to how Jackman got involved. Travolta gets the “lean and mean” just right while Jackman plays the sad-faced, puzzled hacker with a soft spot. The chemistry works. >From the beginning of the film, which has quite an action scene, the audience is carried through a high-tech world of banking. No deposit slips here. If you aren’t particularly computer savvy, you might be confused. After the miserable “Battlefield Earth” and equally depressing, “Numbers,” Travolta knows how to get back in the game.

In retrospect, Travolta plays the same character-type as in “Battlefield Earth.” Conquer-no emotion-gather the wealth-to heck with everyone else. Whereas in “Battlefield,” the script was moronic (a thousand years strip mining Earth and they aren’t finished yet?), “Swordfish” exists with minimal dialogue and a plot to strip-mine the government of excess cash. Someone learned his lesson.
