THE TAILOR OF PANAMA

“The Tailor of Panama” is a clever screen adaptation of John le Carre’s spy novel. The film is reminiscent of the 1950’s classic starring Sir Alec Guinness and Ernie Kovacs, “Our Man in Havana.” In both films, someone is recruited as a spy, can’t deliver the goods and then starts to fabricate information. “The Tailor of Panama” stars Geoffrey Rush (“Quills”) as Harry Pendel, Pierce Brosnan (James Bond films) as Andy Osnard, while Jamie Lee Curtis (“Halloween: H2O”) is Harry’s wife, Louisa, Catherine McCormack is Francesca, and Harold Pinter is Uncle Benny. The film was directed by John Boorman.

Harry Pendel is a masterful tailor. He has a deft hand with fabric and knows just what to say to his customers. Wife Louisa is the love of his life and he has two children, Mark (Daniel Radcliffe, the new “Harry Potter”) and Sarah (Lola Boorman.). Enter Andy Osnard, a British spy, who has been disgracefully sent to Panama for sleeping with every woman he can. Andy must complete an assignment or get out…period. He recruits Harry with promises of money (Harry is in debt), but Harry can’t deliver, so he starts inventing information. In the meantime, Andy has an eye for Louisa, Francesca and any woman in skirts. Andy’s status goes up with his superiors as he passes on Harry’s information. Where will this intriguing trail of misinformation end?

Geoffrey Rush, once again, inhabits a role and this time it is Harry, the tailor. Harry’s secret is that he learned his trade, not in elegant shops, but in prison. Brosnan plays a cad for all its worth and believes the world owes him money and a woman. Jamie Lee Curtis is a bit stiff in her role, perhaps it’s because she shows a fair amount of skin here. The rest of the cast includes Brendan Gleeson (“The General”) and Leanor Varela (television’s “Cleopatra”). The atmosphere of Panama is well done at the time when this small country was beginning to flex its muscles. There is action, but don’t expect wildness such as with a regular James Bond film. “The Tailor of Panama” offers character studies with people trying to keep their secrets, secret.
