"The Mexican" isn’t a restaurant; it’s a famous pistol that is supposed to have a curse on it. The film stars possibly the most popular couple in filmdom right now, Julia Roberts ("Erin Brockovich") and Brad Pitt (Snatch") (did you think I was going to say Nicole and Tom?) Also, James Gandolfini (television’s "The Sopranos") is in the cast.
The screenplay is an original by J. H. Wyman and directed by Gore Verbinski ("Mouse Hunt.") You could almost say the gun is a character in the film, as the workmanship is superior with a specially shaped bullet chamber and intricate carving on the handle.
The premise of "The Mexican" centers on the relationship between Brad and Julia. She wants him to quit the life of crime and come with her, while he feels he owes one last job to his crime boss. Brad goes after "The Mexican" but while he does, Julia finds she is being chased by two gunmen and one, Gandolfini finally catches her. The idea is to exchange her for the gun. In the meantime, Pitt has the gun, but begins to think the firearm really is cursed as accidents start to pile up. The history of the gun is told in flashbacks. Who will end up with one of the most famous firearms of the Old West?
Don’t go to this film thinking you will see Brad Pitt and Julia Roberts in every scene. The beginning and end of the film is more like it. They could have e-mailed their dialogue in. Julia’s scenes with Gandolfini, in which she explains why she stays with Pitt, are interesting and take up a lot of screen time. The gunman begins to like Julia and starts offering advice like a lovelorn advisor. Pitt shows comedic timing as a guy who encounters one mishap after another. Julia is her frenetic self and thoroughly likeable. If you haven’t seen James Gandolfini before, you will be interested in his role here. Before you know it, he starts to steal the scene. Others in the cast are Bob Balaban, J. K. Simmons, David Krumholtz, Michael Cerveris and Sherman Augustus.(Remember Augustus from his NFL career with the San Diego Chargers and Minnesota Vikings.)
The ending of "The Mexican" feels tacked on, as though the story had run on too long and a committee decided it was time to end the film. This is a bone that I have to pick with Hollywood these days. An interesting story and a fast wind-up. So fast, in fact, that you head throbs in disbelief, "…let’s wind it up, guys, only two minutes to go…"
Be aware of violence, sexual situations and profanity.
