Fresh from heradventures in "The Cell," comes Jennifer Lopez as "The Wedding Planner." Her co-star is Matthew McConaughey ("U-571")as the guy who is engaged but still looking elsewhere. Others in the film are Judy Greer, KathyNajimy, and Bridgette Wilson-Sampras ("Beautiful.’)
The premise of "The Wedding Planner" concerns a woman (Lopez) who iscaught up in her career so much she doesn’t have time for a life of her own.This gal gives the word "organization" new meaning. Then, into her life, comes the social wedding of the year thatwill give her business an enormous boost. Trouble is, Lopez has met a guy (Matthew) who melts her heart andimagine the surprise when she finds out he is the fiancé of thebride-to-be (Bridgette) of the weddingshe is planning. Matthew plays a ratherlaid-back pediatrician (wears glasses to look intelligent) and is going alongwith the marriage thing because he really can’t say "no." Bridgette is a career woman who decides sheis right for marriage and Matthew has been available for years. What to do with this triangle? Enter a fourth party, Justin Chambers, whois the handpicked husband for Jennifer. Dad (Alex Rocco) wants Jennifer to marry into an Italian family.
As you can imagine, there is merrimenthere, plus some throwbacks to the musicals of the Forties. A scene where Jennifer and Matthew are inthe park watching an old Janet Leigh-Tony Martin musical on an outdoor screen,cause them to start dancing to the music. Nice touch.
"TheWedding Planner" is a romantic comedy that asks the question: should you marrybecause you think it’s time to do it, or does love enter the equation? Lopez does well as the planner who handlesher business well but gets disconnected with love. All McConaughey has to do is show up for this role and he managesa dance scene well enough. Wilson-Sampras is fine as the bride-to-be with money to burn. Director Adam Shankman pulls the productiontogether, and watch for Fred Willard ("Best in Show") to steal his scene as adance teacher.
