LARA CROFT: TOMB RAIDER

“Tomb Raider” is a big screen adaptation of the video game featuring the heroine, Lara Croft. Angelina Jolie (“Girl Interrupted”) got the part and it was made for her. We are talking attitude here with a capital “A.” This heroine (who can’t help but be called a female “Indiana Jones”) packs twin guns and isn’t afraid of anything. Director Simon West (“Con Air”) must have had a ball doing this film. By the way, there is supposed to be at least one proposed sequel, also starring Jolie, in case “Tomb Raider” makes it big at the box office.

Lara Croft is the daughter of a titled British family. Her father, Lord Croft (played by Jolie’s real life father, actor Jon Voight from “Pearl Harbor”), was a scientist and Lara’s mentor. Lara would rather explore tombs and archeology sites than be a member of aristocracy, so she’s out there on her own with the help of Simon (a robot), Noah Taylor (from “Shine” and her tech guy) and the faithful butler, British actor Christopher Barrie. Right now, this is reminiscent of “Batman.” However, Lara is her own person and runs against the villain, Powell (Ian Glenn from Nicole Kidman’s play “The Blue Room”) in search of a priceless artifact that controls time. Lara wears clinging outfits (let’s try sprayed-on), kicks posterior on a regular basis and is Jolie’s character all the way.

I am Tomb Raider-challenged, never having played the game. Jolie does a fair job of the stunts (suspend belief) and the story is totally wild. A secret society that waits 5000 years to control time? Her style of acting here is to strike a pose and then recite dialogue. This may go for the video game, but it’s affective here. This is escapist-entertainment. Some of the special effects are ingenious (the temple within a temple in Cambodia) and reminiscent of Ray Harryhausen in that statues come alive and start sword fights. Probably the best part is the invasion of Lara’s home while she is practicing some kind of Zen-bungee jumping. All in all, the film is curiously vacant and the only dialogue that comes close to grabbing the audience is between Croft and her father.

The film is rated PG-13 for suggestive dialogue, partial nudity and violence.
